WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team saw its 2016 season come to a close with a 3-1 loss at top-seeded and 13th-ranked McDaniel College Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference (CC) championship tournament.
The Bullets played from behind nearly the entire match after the Green Terror (16-1-1) scored less than two minutes into the contest. McDaniel moves on to the CC championship match to face the winner of the second semifinal between second-seeded and 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins University and third-seeded Swarthmore College.
Sophomore
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored for Gettysburg while classmate
Kiera Loftus (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) finished with eight saves. Loftus finished the season with 87 stops, tying for ninth in single-season school history and the most by a Gettysburg goalie since 2007.
Gettysburg concluded the year with an 8-8-2 record; however, all but two of its losses came versus nationally-ranked opponents.
McDaniel was awarded a corner kick just over a minute into the game and Kristen Upton cashed in, heading in a pass from Abby Keen to make it 1-0 just 1:26 into the contest.
The Green Terror would outshoot the Bullets 7-1 in the opening half, but Loftus made a pair of saves early in the period to keep her team within one. However, the hosts broke through again in the 17th minute on a counterattack shot at the top of box from Nicole Hill to put the Terror up 2-0.
Loftus prevented further damage when she stopped two more shots just over a minute apart late in the period. Freshman
Brigitte Mullineaux (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) took Gettysburg's first shot with just 18 ticks showing, but it was saved by Green Terror keeper Sarah McDonald.
Like McDaniel in the first half, the Bullets earned a corner kick a little over a minute into the second stanza. Junior
Jessica Cuttone (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) served it into the box from the right corner, and Miesemer was there to head home a bouncing ball in traffic, cutting the deficit to 2-1. It was Miesemer's team-leading fourth goal of the season and her second in as many games.
Loftus continued to stand tall for the Bullets with three more stops early in the half. But the Green Terror used another corner kick to add an insurance goal, as another serve from Keen in the 65th minute resulted in a McDaniel own goal.
The Bullets held the Terror to just two shots the rest of the way, one of which was saved by Loftus. However, McDaniel limited Gettysburg without a shot during the stretch and finished with a 7-1 shot advantage for the period.
The match marked the final collegiate game for seniors
Carly Cobbol (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield),
Courtney Long (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich),
Julia Ramsey (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), and
Hannah Theurer (Darnestown, Md./Northwest), who finished their careers with an outstanding four-year record of 43-16-14, four-straight Centennial Conference playoff appearances, and one NCAA Division III tournament berth.
