Bullets Blank Blazers in Season Opener

Kelley Goes 4-for-5; Power, Brown Combine for Shutout

Andy Kelley went 4-for-5 versus Hood as Gettysburg won their season opener.
Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. – Senior Andy Kelley (Newtown, Pa./Newtown) went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs while juniors Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and Eric Brown (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) combined on a seven-hit shutout, leading the Gettysburg College baseball team to a 12-0 victory in its season opener over Hood College at Frederick Community College on Tuesday.

The Bullets piled up 17 hits, with senior Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) also enjoying a big season debut. Making his first career start at first base, he went 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Sophomore Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) finished 3-for-6 with a double for Gettysburg, which scored 10 of its runs from the third through the sixth innings. In addition, senior Luke Lawrence (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) made his first career start as a position player and went 3-for-5 at the plate. A former All-Centennial Conference pitcher, Lawrence started in leftfield and singled in his first three career at-bats.

Power spun six innings and yielded just five hits before giving way to Brown, who allowed just two hits over the final three frames to pick up his first career save.

Hood (2-4), coached by former Bullet Cory Beddick '10, is in just its second season as a varsity program. The Blazers lost 11-2 to Gettysburg in their inaugural home game last season.

Gettysburg supplied Power with all of the run support he would need with a three-run, four-hit third. The Bullets tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to chase starter Riley Fitzgerald (0-1), added one in the fifth to make it 6-0, then broke it open up with a four-run, four-hit sixth. Klimowicz provided the big blow in the sixth with a two-run double, then drove in a run with another two-bagger in the eighth.

Power faced his biggest challenge in the first, when the Blazers put runners on the corners with two outs. But he escaped with a groundout to second.

Hood managed just two baserunners from the second through the fourth. In the fifth, the hosts led off with back-to-back singles, but Power induced a lineout to second followed by an inning-ending 3-6-3 double play.

Brown was just as sharp and did not allow a runner to reach second over his three innings. He provided the finishing touches with a three-up, three-down ninth.

The Bullets continue their season March 6-12, when they play 10 games over seven days during their Spring Break trip to Ft. Myers, Fla.
