Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) posted a pair of hits and two RBI in the opener and then blasted a walk-off double in the nightcap as Gettysburg College completed a non-league sweep of Stevenson University.
Gettysburg (12-2) closed out the opener 8-0 in five innings. The Bullets jumped out with two runs in the opening inning, the first scoring on a bases-loaded walk to
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) and the second coming across on a passed ball.
That was more than enough support for sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Reilly didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and allowed only one runner to reach second base in the game. The latter threat was put to rest in the fifth inning on a diving catch by senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) near the foul line in right field.
The hosts posted six runs in the bottom of the fifth to put an early end to the contest. Taylor provided the big blow with a two-run double to left field and the last tally came across on a squeeze bunt by sophomore
Jessica Casale (Cranford, N.J./Cranford).
Taylor finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Hisgen posted a pair of RBI and Zengel reached base three times on a pair of hits and a walk.
Reilly improved to 7-2 with the win. She struck out six and did not surrender an earned run for the fourth consecutive outing.
The nightcap went back-and-forth until Gettysburg brought across the winning run in its final at bat for a 6-5 victory.
Kristen Mueller led off the contest with a home run over the fence for Stevenson (3-11). The Mustangs added an unearned run in the second for a 2-0 advantage.
Gettysburg posted four runs in the third inning. Zengel brought home the first after drawing a bases-loaded walk and sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) plated the second on a fielder's choice. Hisgen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and sophomore
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) singled through the left side to score the final run.
Stevenson regained the lead in the next inning as Sabrina Gordon tripled in two runs and then scored on a throwing error. The Mustangs tried to pad the lead in the sixth after a lead-off double by Jasmyn Ogletree. With the pinch runner on third, Taylor fired a throw down the line in a pick-off attempt. The toss sailed high, but junior left fielder
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) picked up the ball and gunned down the runner at home.
Zengel brought in the game-tying run in the bottom of the sixth with a double to left field. The two-bagger was the 45th of the senior's career, tying her with
Adrienne Rahs '12 for the program record.
Freshman
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) shut down the Mustangs in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the frame, Leonardo singled up the middle with one out. A bad throw by the pitcher to second on a fielder's choice put the winning run in scoring position and Taylor took advantage, blasting a double to the fence in left-center to end the game.
Leonardo finished 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Casale went 2-for-3 with a run. Zengel posted a pair of RBI to move into third on the career list with 113.
Clauser improved to 5-0 this season after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks.
Gettysburg begins its Centennial Conference schedule with a doubleheader at Muhlenberg College on Saturday. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
