Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Stevenson University scored eight runs over its last two innings and the Mustangs pulled away late to hand Gettysburg a 12-4 loss in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
Â
The Bullets (13-8) slugged five extra-base hits but were hurt by seven errors, which led to eight unearned runs.
Â
Senior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Gettysburg at the plate while classmate
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) went 2-for-3 with a double.
Â
Jake Hall blasted a pair of home runs, including a go-ahead solo shot leading off the eighth, for Stevenson (12-12). Hall also scored four runs while Ian Eberly finished 3-for-6 for the Mustangs.
Â
It was a back-and-forth game in the early going, and the Bullets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, when senior
Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) pounded a double into right-center off side-armed starter Matt Myers. He scored on a two-out single to right from Klimowicz.
Â
With the wind whipping out to leftfield, Hall put Stevenson on the scoreboard in the second inning with his first homer of the day – a solo shot to left off junior starting pitcher
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View). Jake Dimon then put the Mustangs up 3-1 with a two-out, two-run double in the third.
Â
Gettysburg pulled even with Klimowicz drilled a two-run shot over the left-center fence for his second long ball of the season.
Â
After three innings of work, Bezio gave way to junior
Jonathan Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's), who tossed a pair of shutout innings before yielding an unearned run in the sixth that gave the Mustangs a 4-3 lead.
Â
The Bullets tied the game again in the sixth, when Moffitt led off with a triple to right and scored when senior
Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) blooped a fly ball that got past a diving centerfielder for a double. However, Myers would get out of the jam by retiring the next three batters.
Â
After Lucido gave up a leadoff single in the seventh, freshman
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) came on to induce three straight outs. But Hall would go on to drill the first pitch of the eighth inning over the leftfield fence, and the Mustangs tacked on seven unearned runs off Wortmann and freshman
Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) over the next two innings.
Â
Myers came away with a no-decision after scattering four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four. Arik Fenstermacher (1-0) picked up the win for Stevenson, throwing two shutout innings.
Â
Bezio allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four while Lucido gave up just one unearned run on two hits and three walks over three innings of relief.
Â
Wortmann (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk over 1 2/3 innings. Dobbins was touched for four runs, though none were earned, over 1 1/3 innings.
Â
Gettysburg returns to Kirchhoff Field on Thursday, when it takes on Juniata College at 3:30 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
