Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team pounded out eight extra-base hits and the Bullets tuned up for Centennial Conference play with a 12-4 victory over Juniata College in a non-league outing Thursday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

Junior Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) had a big day at the plate to lead the Bullets (14-8), who were playing their final out-of-conference game of the regular season. Taking a break from his usual position at catcher, Anderson started at designated hitter and finished 4-for-5 three runs, four RBIs, a double, and a home run.

In a game played with a ferocious wind blowing out to centerfield, Gettysburg slugged seven doubles on the afternoon, getting two apiece from seniors Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) and Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South), who also drove in three runs. Senior Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored while senior Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished 2-for-5.

Junior Chase Stopyra (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) started on the mound for the Bullets and earned his first win of the season. He retired the first eight batters of the game and went on to pitch five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six and no walks while striking out a career-high five.

Freshman Jonny Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) tossed a perfect 2 1/3 innings to earn his first career save.

Isaac Kline and Alex Matoushek picked up two hits apiece for Juniata (6-14).

Gettysburg never trailed after Anderson blasted his team-leading third home run of the season – a two-run shot to centerfield in the bottom of the first off Eagle starter Caleb Pepperday. He followed up with an RBI-single in the third to make it a 3-0 game.

In the meantime, Stopyra (1-1) was cruising through the first three innings, when he faced the minimum nine batters. Matoushek broke up the perfect game with a two-out single in the third, but he was caught stealing to end the inning.

The Eagles pulled even with a three-run, four-hit fourth. A pair of singles sandwiched around a hit batsman made it 3-1 before Stopyra induced a 6-4-3 double play that also scored a run. Juniata would push across the tying run following an error and back-to-back singles.

Gettysburg went in front to stay with a two-run fifth versus reliever David DeFreest. Wright provided the big blow with a two-out, two-run double into the right-center gap.

The Bullets nudged their lead to 6-3 in the sixth, when Moffitt doubled leading off before scoring on an error.

Sophomore Ryan Janiga (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) came on to fire a scoreless sixth inning before running into trouble in the seventh. The Eagles used a pair of singles and a walk to cut the deficit to 6-4, and Bray was summoned out of the bullpen with runners on first and second and two outs. Bray would put out the fire by striking out Juniata's No. 3 hitter, then retired six straight hitters to end the game. He finished with a season-high four strikeouts.

DeFreest (0-2) absorbed the loss for Juniata, giving up three runs on four hits over two innings.

The Bullets play their Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, when they visit Ursinus College in a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
