Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to lift Gettysburg College to a 3-2 win over Greensboro College on the second day of the team's spring trip.
Gettysburg (7-1) picked up two more wins on Tuesday, but with opposite storylines. After putting up 15 hits in a 13-0 win over Penn State Berks in the morning, the Bullets got off to a slow start against Greensboro (9-5). The Pride scored an unearned run in the first inning and made it a 2-0 advantage with a two-out score in the third.
Gettysburg loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third frame. The squad brought across just one run on a sacrifice fly by
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall).
Freshman
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) allowed only one Greensboro baserunner to reach second base in the final four innings. That runner was doubled off on second after a fly out to center field in the fifth inning.
The drama was set for the final at bat. Freshman
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) led off the seventh with a single. After a sacrifice moved the runner to second, Twitchell drew her third walk of the game. Abell came through in the clutch, rapping a double to plate both runs and end the game.
Clauser improved to 2-0 after allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out five. Abell finished 2-for-4 and senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) went 2-for-2 with a walk.
Gettysburg cruised in the opener as sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and junior
Samantha Nestor (Reading, Mass./Brooks School) combined for a one-hitter. Reilly allowed only two walks and struck out two in the first four innings, while Nestor surrendered the only hit in the fifth.
The Bullets put up runs in every inning they went to the plate. Two came across on a single by Leonardo in the first and two more came home on back-to-back doubles by Twitchell and Abell in the second. The floodgates officially opened in the third when 11 batters went to the plate and six came around to score. Zengel punctuated the inning with a two-run single.
Twitchell finished a home run shy of the cycle after going 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Abell went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while Zengel and Leonardo each posted two hits and two RBI. Sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh) went 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk and Taylor picked up a pair of hits.
Gettysburg takes on Lycoming College and Penn State Altoona at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., respectively, on Wednesday.
