Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg College softball team bounced back from an extra-inning loss to Lycoming College with a 6-0 victory over Penn State Altoona on Wednesday.
Gettysburg (8-2) dropped its first game of its spring trip 1-0 to Lycoming (4-0) in eight innings. Sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) kept the Warriors at bay offensively, allowing just three base runners through the first five innings.
The Bullets put runners in scoring position in the second, third, and fourth innings, but came up empty. After back-to-back singles by senior
Meghan Hisgen (Northport, N.Y./Commack) and sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School), a wild pitch put the runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth. Lycoming hurler Rachael Shady induced a fly out to right field to get out of the inning.
The Warriors pushed the leadoff runner all the way to third to start the sixth, but a groundout to shortstop closed the threat.
In the top of the eighth inning, Gettysburg loaded the bases with one out. The lead runner was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice and a routine grounder to the mound ended the Bullets' scoring opportunity.
Lycoming scored the lone run in the home half of the frame. With one out on the board, back-to-back singles and a throwing error set the stage for the winning run to come home on a fielder's choice.
Reilly fell to 5-2 despite allowing just an unearned run over 7.1 innings. She allowed five hits and two walks while fanning eight. Senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Folfas each went 2-for-3.
Gettysburg had no issues in the second outing behind another sterling pitching performance by freshman
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington). The first-year improved to 3-0 and posted her first collegiate shutout after allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings.
The Bullets put runners in scoring position in every frame and did most of the damage with five runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings. Junior
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) posted doubles in both innings, the second of which drove in a run and followed a two-run triple by sophomore
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall).
Folfas continued her hot hitting by going 3-for-4 with a run. She has posted a base hit in all but one game this spring and leads the team with a .500 batting average. Misurell went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI, while Leonardo went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and a stolen base. Zengel added another hit as she moved into third place on Gettysburg's all-time list. She now has 176 career base hits, two more than
Mandy Wilson '02.
Gettysburg closes its spring trip with a pair of games on Thursday. The Bullets face Hunter College at 3:30 p.m. followed by Mount Aloysius College at 5:30.
