Box Score 2 CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Gettysburg College and Washington College split a doubleheader in a battle between to the top two teams in the Centennial Conference standings.
Gettysburg (21-7, 8-2 CC) received a two-run home run by freshman
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) to get by Washington (17-17, 8-4 CC) 4-2 in the opening game. The Shorewomen allowed just four hits by the visitors in a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.
The Bullets struck first in the opening inning of game one. Sophomore
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) doubled down the left-field line and came around to score on a two-out single by sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School).
After Washington tied the game with a run in the second inning, Gettysburg retook the lead in the third. Another extra-base knock by Twitchell, this time a triple to right-center, set the stage for a run-scoring single by senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon). The RBI was the 120th of Zengel's career, tying her with
Mandy Wilson '02 for the program's all-time record.
The Shorewomen stranded runners in all seven innings, including two in the fifth. With runners on first and second with one out, sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) picked up a pair of fly outs to the outfield to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Taylor belted her first collegiate home run to push the lead to 4-1. The Bullets loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but couldn't cash in after posting a strikeout and ground out.
Washington scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. The hosts put runners on first and second with two outs, but a fly out to center field capped the game.
Reilly improved to 12-5 after giving up two runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Taylor went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI, while Twitchell finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Gettysburg's offense sputtered in the nightcap with a season-low four hits. Three of those hits came in the first inning with senior
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) bringing in the game's first run with a double.
Washington scored a pair of runs on a double by Trish Langley and a fielder's choice by Clare Hofstedt in the fourth inning. The Shorewomen added an insurance run on a double by Paige Briganti in the fifth to make it 3-1.
In addition the season-low hit total, the Bullets struck out a season-high nine times against Maddie Bennett, who moved to 9-3 on the season.
Gettysburg hits the road for a doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday, April 19, beginning at 3 p.m.
