Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) took over the program's career RBI record and became just the second Centennial Conference player ever to reach 200 hits as Gettysburg College picked up a split at Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday.
Gettysburg (22-8, 9-3 CC) remained on top of the conference standings by one game with the split at Franklin & Marshall (17-13, 5-7 CC). The Bullets won the opener 6-5 before falling in the nightcap 11-3.
Coming into the twinbill tied with
Mandy Wilson '02 for the program's all-time lead in RBI, Zengel broke the deadlock with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning. It was the senior's 121st RBI, which also pushed her into sole possession of third place on the conference's all-time list. The base knock was Zengel's third of the game and made her the first Gettysburg player and second in Centennial history to reach 200 hits, joining Washington College's Lauren Dockrill (221).
Zengel's RBI was part of a three-run inning which gave Gettysburg a 3-1 lead in game two. Franklin & Marshall responded by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Diplomats added two more runs in the sixth to end the game.
In the opening game, the Bullets picked up five runs in the top of the second inning. Junior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) provided the big blow with a three-run double to left field and scored on a single by sophomore
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely).
The Diplomats cut the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, including two on a single by Samantha Clemens. Erin Russell tied the game with a two-run homer the following inning.
Sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) settled into a groove after Russell's longball, retiring 13 of the final 14 batters she faced.
Gettysburg threated with runners in scoring position in every inning of the opener, but it wasn't until the sixth when the winning run came across. Junior
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) drew a leadoff walk and advanced all the way around the bases on wild pitches to score the winning tally.
Reilly improved to 13-5 this season. She allowed five runs on six hits and struck out six. Abell and senior
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) each went 3-for-4. Freshman
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) finished 2-for-4.
Gettysburg visits third-place McDaniel College (18-14, 7-5 CC) this Saturday. The doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m.
