GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Jack Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) drilled a pinch-hit, walk-off single to cap a furious comeback in the opener, and the Gettysburg College baseball team went to sweep Muhlenberg College in a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader on Senior Day and Project ALS Day Saturday at Kirchhoff Field.
Â
Trailing 8-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth in Game One, the Bullets (23-12-1, 9-4-1 CC) rallied with five runs on six hits and an error. Gettysburg would capture the nightcap 5-1, and is now in second place in the Centennial Conference standings.
Â
Senior
Henry Klimowicz (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) led the Bullets at the plate, going 6-for-8, while classmate
Andrew Hourigan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) finished 4-for-9.
Â
On the mound, freshman
Jonny Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) worked 3 2/3 innings of excellent relief in the opener to earn his first career win. Then in the second game, junior
Chase Stopyra (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) fired 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win before classmate
Jonathan Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) came on to toss 3 2/3 scoreless innings to record his first save of the year.
Â
Gettysburg's seven seniors were honored prior to the start of the game, and between games a "Project ALS Day" ceremony was held as the baseball team's "Take ALS Yard" efforts were recognized.
Â
The opening was a pitcher's duel in the early going between junior
Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) and Muhlenberg's Timmy Pilrun. The Bullets led 3-1 heading into the sixth, but that's when the Mules (15-19, 6-8 CC) erupted for a six-run inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. However, Bray prevented further damage when he was called on with the bases loaded and immediately induced a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play. He went on to yield just an unearned run the rest of the way.
Â
The Bullets pulled to within 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth before the Mules answered with a run in the top of the ninth, setting up the dramatic finish. Reliever Christopher Bunero retired the leadoff batter before senior
Steve Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) sparked the rally with a double. Klimowicz, senior
Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown), and junior
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) followed up with three-straight singles, with the last two scoring runs to make it an 8-6 game.
Â
Hourigan then reached on an error that cut the deficit to one before senior
Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) clubbed a game-tying single to left, prompting another pitching change. RJ Hennessy came on to face Seibert, who drilled a 1-2 pitch through the left side, setting off a wild celebration on the field.
Â
Henry Klimowicz went 6-for-8 in the Bullets' sweep of Muhlenberg.
Klimowicz went 4-for-4 in the opener, when the Bullets outhit the Mules 16-12. Anderson, Kelley, Tom, and Moffitt all finished with two hits apiece.
Â
Bray (1-0) scattered four hits and one walk while striking out three, yielding just an unearned run.
Â
The Bullets supported Stopyra with single runs in each of the first four innings in the nightcap. Sophomore
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) doubled leading off the first and scored on a Wright sacrifice fly before Moffitt doubled home a run in the second versus starter Sam Kasten. Back-to-back two-baggers from Wright and Klimowicz made it a 3-0 game in the third before junior
John Convery (Media, Pa./Penncrest) added an RBI-single in the fourth.
Â
Stopyra, in the meantime, was in command, allowing only one baserunner over each of the first five innings, with just one advancing to second. After a leadoff double from John Icaza and a one-out walk in the sixth, he was relieved by Lucido, who struck out a pair of Mules looking. In between the strikeouts was an error that led to Muhlenberg's lone run of the game.
Â
Lucido went on to spin three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while working the longest outing of his career. Stopyra (3-1) scattered five hits and two walks while striking out four.
Â
Hourigan led the Bullets at the plate in the second game, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs while Probst, Wright, and Klimowicz all banged two hits.
Â
Gettysburg visits McDaniel College at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in another Centennial Conference match-up.
