GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) shattered the program's single-game record for home runs with three in the nightcap as Gettysburg College earned a split in a non-conference doubleheader with Susquehanna University at Bobby Jones Field.

Twitchell's record-breaking performance wasn't enough to lift Gettysburg (23-11) to a victory in game two as Susquehanna (23-13) jumped out to an early lead and held on for an 8-6 decision. The Bullets posted 10 runs in the fourth inning on the way to an 11-7 victory in the opener.

After the Crusaders opened the nightcap with three runs in the top of the first, Twitchell put the hosts on the board by planting a two-run shot over the fence in right-center in the bottom of the frame.

Susquehanna added two more runs in the second inning to jump in front 5-2. It didn't take long for Twitchell to tie the program's single-game home run mark with a solo bomb in the second inning well past the spot of her first home run.

The Crusaders kept the offense going with single runs in the next two frames to jump ahead 7-3. Gettysburg picked up a run in the fifth only to see the visitors regain the four-run lead on a single through the right side by Kelly Miller.

In the bottom of the sixth, junior Genie Lavanant (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Blair Academy) led off the inning with a single to left. A pair of pop ups brought up Twitchell for a chance at the record. The sophomore slugger didn't disappoint, planting the first offering from Alexa Gonzalez beyond the fence down the right-field line. The two-run shot cut the margin to 8-6.

A one-out double by freshman Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but a fly out to right field turned into a double play as the pinch-runner was thrown out trying to advance.

Twitchell finished 3-for-4 with five RBI. In addition to setting the program record, she tied the Centennial Conference record and became the first conference player to hit three home runs in a game in a decade. Twitchell set a Gettysburg record with 12 total bases and she also tied the program's single-season record with her seventh home run of the spring.

Seniors Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) each posted a pair of hits in game two.

Gettysburg found itself down 4-1 after Susquehanna's fourth at bat in the opening game. The floodgates opened in the bottom of the fourth as 14 Bullets went up to the plate and 10 came around to score. Sophomore Jessica Casale (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) started the scoring with an RBI single down the left-field line and she added a run-scoring double in her second at bat of the inning.

Twitchell brought in two runs with a single up the middle off the shortstop's glove and Hisgen plated two more with a single. Junior Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) scored a pair with a double to the gap in left-center and after Casale's second hit, junior Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) closed the inning with a two-run single up the middle to make it 11-4.

Susquehanna tacked on three runs in the final two innings before sophomore Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) shut the door with a strikeout and pop-out to end the game. Reilly improved to 14-6 with the victory.

Hisgen finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Lavanant went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored, while Abell and Casale each posted two hits.

Gettysburg closes the regular season against Haverford College on Saturday at Bobby Jones Field. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
