GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College certainly had a flair for the dramatic in its final regular-season doubleheader as the Bullets swept visiting Haverford College to clinch the second seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs next week.
Gettysburg (25-11, 11-5 CC) entered the day in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings alongside Haverford (20-18, 9-7 CC) and McDaniel College (24-16, 10-6 CC). The Bullets broke the deadlock and secured a playoff spot with a 9-1 victory over the Fords in game one, which ended on a grand slam by junior
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr).
In the nightcap, Haverford rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning. A lead-off home run by sophomore
Jessica Casale (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) tied the game and freshman
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) plated the game-winning score with a two-out single to right-center for a 6-5 decision.
The Fords drew first blood in game one with an unearned run coming around in the first inning. That would be the only score against sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who struck out the side in the second inning and stranded a pair of runners in the fifth.
Gettysburg scored two runs in the second inning with a single by junior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) putting the hosts ahead 2-1. Misurell brought home another run with a double in the third.
The Bullets tallied six runs in the sixth to end the game. Abell and senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) each posted RBI singles before Misurell blasted her second home run of the season to left field. It was Gettysburg's first grand slam since
Emily Hall '15 hit one against Mount Aloysius College on March 16, 2013.
Reilly struck out five and improved to 15-6 on the year. Misurell went 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Abell went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Zengel recorded a pair of hits.
Gettysburg was firmly in control of game two with Abell scoring the opening run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) in the first inning. Abell added a run-scoring double in the third and Misurell plated a run with a single to center in the fourth. Folfas posted an RBI single to make it 4-0 after five innings.
Gettysburg did not allow a Haverford runner to reach second base through the first six innings. Reilly allowed just two hits through the first five innings before giving way to the bullpen. The Fords rallied in the top of the seventh, cutting the deficit to 4-2 with a two-run single by Emily Gorman. Alexandria Craig gave her team the lead by slamming a three-run homer to left to make the score 5-4.
The Bullets wasted no time tying the game as Casale stepped up to the plate and pocketed the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence for her first collegiate home run. Gettysburg eventually loaded the bases with one out thanks to a hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks. After an infield pop-up, Taylor produced her second walk-off hit of the season by knocking a single to the gap in right-center to plate the winning run.
Abell and Casale each finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Freshman
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) picked up the win after getting the final two outs in the seventh inning.
Gettysburg finished in a tie for first with Washington in the conference standings, but the Shorewomen held the tiebreaker over the Bullets and will host the postseason tournament next weekend. McDaniel and Haverford also clinched spots in the double-elimination tournament which runs May 6-8.
