CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Gettysburg College softball team saw its bid for a Centennial Conference championship come to a close with losses to Washington College and Haverford College on Sunday.
Host and top seed Washington (22-18) took advantage of five errors by Gettysburg (26-13) to score seven unearned runs in an 8-3 decision. The Bullets capped the tournament with a 3-1 setback at the hands of Haverford (22-19).
The game against Washington began Saturday evening but was suspended after five innings due to darkness. Gettysburg struck first with a two-run single by junior
Genie Lavanant (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Blair Academy) in the second inning.
Washington dropped five runs in the third inning with the help of two errors by the Bullets. Maddie Bennett provided the big blow with a two-run double to right field and Meredith Maynard capped the frame with a run-scoring single to make it 5-2.
Another defensive miscue set the stage for two unearned runs to come across on a pinch-hit single by Regan Horan in the top of the fifth. Gettysburg picked up a run on a single by senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) before the game was suspended following the fifth inning.
The teams played out the final two innings Sunday morning with the hosts tacking on an unearned run in the top of the seventh.
Lavanant paced the Bullets offensively by going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) struck out six over 4.2 innings and fell to 16-7 on the year.
Facing Haverford with a trip to the CC title game on the line, Gettysburg put up the game's first run as lead-off hitter
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) singled up the middle and came around to score on a single by sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School). The Bullets packed the bags later in the frame, but Kendall Chambers induced a grounder to second to get out of the jam.
Gettysburg's offense fell silent over the final six innings, managing just two more hits and putting just one runner in scoring position.
Haverford loaded the bases in the first inning, but came up empty. The Fords converted on their next scoring opportunity, however, bringing across an unearned run in the second inning. RBI singles by Kaitlyn Guild and Alex Craig in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, set the final margin.
Sophomore
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Md./Greely) reached base twice via a single and hit-by-pitch for the Bullets. Freshman
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) fell to 10-5 with the loss. Clauser allowed six hits and one earned run over four innings.
