COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team got off to a slow start in its Centennial Conference opener at Ursinus College, but the Bullets bounced back to overpower the Bears 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (7-3, 1-0 CC) fell behind early in the opening set which saw Ursinus (5-4, 0-2 CC) seize a 25-19 victory. The Bullets stormed back with an attack percentage of .322 over the final three sets to win 25-18, 25-15, and 25-7. Gettysburg trailed just once in the final three contests.
Freshman
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) paced the attack with 14 kills and added seven digs. Senior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) picked up 10 kills and seven digs, while junior
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) tallied nine kills and five block assists. Junior
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and freshman
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) recorded eight and seven kills, respectively, with Weikert adding nine digs and three block assists.
Freshman
Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) led the way defensively with 19 digs. Sequeira also posted two of the team's eight service aces. Junior
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) put up 36 assists and eight digs.
Allison Raff led Ursinus with 12 kills and 16 digs. Kelly Piotrowicz finished with a triple-double of 10 kills, 15 assists, and 14 digs.
Gettysburg plays at Susquehanna University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.
