WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit with a three-goal second half and captured its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory at King's College Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Monarch/Royal Classic.
Three different players scored for Gettysburg (1-1), with junior
Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) striking for the game-winner in the 80th minute. Senior
KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) assisted twice for the Bullets, who outshot the Monarchs 21-3 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
One day after a tough 1-0 loss to defending Landmark Conference champion University of Scranton, the Bullets earned a big win over a King's team that finished 16-4-1 a year ago.
It was just the second-ever meeting between the two teams, with Gettysburg winning 5-0 in the previous match-up back in 1994.
Junior
Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) needed to make just two saves to earn the win in goal for the Bullets while Owen Geedey stopped six shots for King's (0-2).
The Orange and Blue held a 9-2 shot advantage in the opening half but were unable to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, Cassidy Tripolitis put King's on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute on a shot from the left wing, and it held up as the only goal in the period.
The Bullets turned up the heat early in the second half, reeling off four shots – including two on goal – over the opening 15 minutes. Gettysburg finally broke through in the 63rd minute, when senior
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) looped in a header inside the left post. DePontes set up the goal with a cross from the right.
Gettysburg kept the Monarchs on their heels over the middle part of the half, peppering Geedey with four shots over an 11-minute stretch before Santini's go-ahead tally. Santini received a pass on a counter attack and dribbled around two defenders before ripping home a shot from the right side of the box.
Freshman
Bobby Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) provided the finishing touches in the 89th minute when he blasted in his first collegiate goal. From the center of the box, he one-timed a DePontes pass from the right side.
Gettysburg plays its home opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday versus another strong opponent, taking on a York (Pa.) College squad that finished in second place in the Capital Athletic Conference last season.
