ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over host Elizabethtown College in a non-conference match Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (4-1) secured its first sweep of Elizabethtown (2-2) since 2009. The Bullets led throughout the first set for a 25-18 decision before securing a pair of back-and-forth bouts with the same 25-22 score.
The Bullets used a well-rounded attack which saw five players with five or more kills. Senior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) and
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) each recorded eight kills, while
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) knocked down seven kills to go with three total blocks.
Junior setter
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) tallied five kills and 25 assists, while junior
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) posted five kills. Junior
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) put up 10 digs and
Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) paced the service game with three aces to go with seven digs.
Gettysburg busted out of the gate with 11 of the first 12 points, including six on kills. The Bullets never let the lead dip below five in the opening set. The tone changed in the second frame with six lead changes and 11 ties. The deficit did not exceed two points until back-to-back points by Gettysburg made it 21-18. Elizabethtown came right back with three-straight points on a kill and two attack errors by the Bullets.
Garison and Godshalk put down kills to hand the lead back to the Orange and Blue. An ace by freshman
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) padded the lead and following a point by the Blue Jays, Garison put the second set to rest with a kill.
The Bullets ran off the first six points of the third set and led 17-9 following an ace by Tringali. Elizabethtown mounted a furious 10-2 rally to tie the match at 19-19. The two sides traded points until Bergin broke a 22-all tie with a kill from the middle of the net. Garison added a tip for a point and Blair polished off the match with a kill.
Gettysburg travels to Messiah College for a tri-match with Moravian College this Saturday. The Bullets face the Falcons at 11 a.m. before taking on the Greyhounds at 1 p.m.
