Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Washington College used a late 9-0 run to pull away for a 52-44 victory over Gettysburg in a Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball contest Saturday afternoon in Bream Gym.
Senior forward
Cody Kiefer (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) posted his 11th career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Bullets (5-12, 4-6 CC), who held the Shoremen to 35.4 percent shooting. The defensive battle marked the second consecutive game in which Gettysburg limited its opponent to under 55 points.
Freshman guard
Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) added season-highs of 11 points, six rebounds, and five steals for the Bullets while senior center
Tanner Kirkpatrick (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) contributed 10 rebounds. Duffey's five thefts were the most by a Bullet since Derek Brooks '13 also had five in a 72-56 win at McDaniel College on Jan. 23, 2013.
James Drury led all players with 20 points for Washington (6-11, 2-8 CC), which earned its first-ever season sweep over the Bullets. Nick Schmelzer added 11 points off the bench for the Shoremen.
A free throw from junior forward
Cameron Stewart (Sydney, Australia/Newington College) tied the game at 38-all with 3:29 left, but that's when the Shoremen embarked on their decisive run. Drury kicked it off with a 3-pointer before Tas Dixon nailed a long jumper to make it a five-point game. Drury and Armand del Castillo each went 2-for-2 at the foul line to push the visitors' lead to 47-38 with 59 seconds left.
Kiefer stopped the bleeding when he dropped in a lay-up at the 49-second mark, but the Bullets were unable to draw any closer as Washington went 5-for-6 at the free-throw line in the final 47 seconds.
Neither side could generate much offense in the early going. Gettysburg outscored the Shoremen 13-5 over the opening 8:35, but managed just six points over remainder of the half. In the meantime, Washington used a 9-0 run to go up 14-13 with 7:05 on the clock. The lead would change hands four more times before the intermission, including on a lay-up from Drury that put Washington up 20-19 with 2:16 left in the period. Those would turn out to be the final points of the half.
The Bullets led by as much as four in the second half, the last time coming on a Kirkpatrick lay-up that made it 30-26 with 10:44 to go. Duffey scored five straight points to give his team a 37-34 lead with 6:16 remaining, but Gettysburg would go without a field goal until Kiefer's late bucket.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Thursday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 8 p.m.
