Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Swarthmore College used a red-hot shooting performance and a big second half to hand the Bullets a 75-58 loss in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Bream Gym.

The 18th-ranked Garnet (11-1, 5-0 CC), which shot 14-for-23 (60.9%) from 3-point territory, led just 35-30 at the half but broke the game open with a 17-0 run to open the second period.

Jim Lammers led Swarthmore with a game-high 23 points off the bench, shooting 8-for-9 from the field and 6-for-7 from beyond the arc. Sam Lebryk added 13 points for the visitors while Cam Wiley and Zack Yonda contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Senior center Mlynue Reeves (Washington, D.C./Church Farm School [Pa.]) made the most of his first career start for the Bullets, posting 12 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) netted 11 points. Senior forward Cody Kiefer (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) chipped in with eight points for Gettysburg, which tied a season-high with eight 3-pointers.

It was a game of runs in the opening half, with Swarthmore outscoring the Bullets 14-5 to open the game. Lammers capped the early spurt with his first two 3-pointers.

The Bullets answered with a 10-0 run to claim the lead. Antolini kicked off the surge with his second 3-pointer, and after a Reeves lay-up, sophomore forward Mateus Maccieri (Reggio Emilia, Italy/John Carroll [Md.]) banked in a 3-pointer. Antolini capped the run when he came up with a steal and went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to hand his team its only lead of the game at 15-14 with 11:50 on the clock.

Swarthmore responded with a 10-0 run of its own, however, and a lay-up from Zac O'Dell made it 24-15 with 8:57 left in the opening period. However, Antolini snapped the drought for the Bullets when he connected on his third and final trey, pulling the hosts to within 24-18 with 7:45 showing.

Gettysburg chipped away at the deficit and drew to within two when junior forward Cameron Stewart (Sydney, Australia/Newington College) splashed in a 3-pointer with 1:00 to go. But Yonda answered with a triple for Swarthmore, giving the Garnet their five-point halftime lead.

Swarthmore then made a defensive stand early in the second stanza, shutting out the Bullets for nearly seven minutes to start the period. In the meantime, the Garnet shot 5-for-8 to start the half, including 3-for-4 from 3-point land, to assume a 52-30 lead with 13:50 left.

The Bullets refused to go quietly, however, and Kiefer drained a 3-pointer with 13:04 remaining to kick off another 10-0 Gettysburg run. Reeves followed up with a conventional 3-point play before freshman guard Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) dropped in back-to-back lay-ups to make it a 52-40 game with 9:56 to go.

Another Kiefer 3-pointer made it 55-43 with 8:11 left, but Cam Wiley, Swarthmore's leading scorer who was held to six points up until that point, scored five big points to kick off a decisive 15-2 Garnet run. Lammers drained his two final 3's during the stretch, and a pair of free throws from Yonda made it 70-45 with 4:52 to go. The Bullets would not go down without a fight, however, and ended the game on an 11-3 run, when senior center Tanner Kirkpatrick (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored all six of his points.

Gettysburg returns to action with three games next week, starting with a road trip to Haverford College on Tuesday. The Bullets and Fords tip off at 8 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
