Box Score

BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins built an eight-point halftime lead, then pulled away in the second half as the host Blue Jays defeated Gettysburg 67-47 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Wednesday evening.

The Blue Jays (14-6, 10-3 CC), who are tied with Swarthmore for first place in the conference standings, were led by Sam Gordon, who posted 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds.

Senior center Mlynue Reeves (Washington, D.C./Church Farm School [Pa.]) nearly reached his third double-double of the season with 18 points and eight rebounds to go with four blocked shots for Gettysburg (6-114, 5-8 CC). Senior guard Pete Christ (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) added 12 points and a season-high eight rebounds, and he also hit a pair of 3-pointers to move into a tie with Corey Dorsey '09 for fifth all-time at Gettysburg with 147 career triples.

Gettysburg led 7-4 with 16:03 left in the opening half after a conventional 3-point play from Reeves. But Hopkins answered with a 15-2 run to open up a 10-point lead (19-9) with 10:52 on the clock. The Bullets whittled the deficit down to 29-25 following Christ's second triple of the night with 3:17 showing, but that would be close as Gettysburg would get. After a lay-up from sophomore forward Mateus Maccieri (Reggio Emilia, Italy/John Carroll School [Md.]) cut it to four again, Ryan Curran hit back-to-back buckets to close the half, including a buzzer-beater to give the Blue Jays their 35-27 halftime advantage.

The hosts stretched their lead to 13 early in the second half, only to see the Bullets respond with a 7-0 run, as a lay-up from Maccieri made it 40-34 with 13:11 left. However, the Blue Jays answered with a 7-0 surge of their own to restore their 13-point advantage, and they would lead by double digits the rest of the way.

Gettysburg twice pulled to within 10, the last time coming on a pair of Reeves free throws that made it 49-39 with 7:54 left, but that's when Hopkins pulled away with a decisive 11-0 run over the next 4:27.

The Bullets resume their schedule with a rare Saturday evening game, taking on Centennial Conference foe Haverford College at 7 p.m.
