Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Five Bullets scored in double figures and the Gettysburg College men's basketball team posted its highest-scoring game in 17 years, topping Centennial Conference (CC) foe Haverford College 100-80 in a rare Saturday evening game in Bream Gym.
Â
The Bullets (7-14, 6-8 CC) never trailed, but Haverford nearly erased a 20-point second-half deficit. The Fords used a 29-10 run to pull to within a point (61-60) midway through the stanza, but Gettysburg torched the nets for 39 points over the final 9:39. The team's 100 points marked Bullets' highest scoring output since a 101-91 victory over Dickinson College on Feb. 19, 2000.
Â
Gettysburg handed out 29 assists on its 39 field goals to come within one assist of the school record set in an 88-51 win over Washington College on Feb. 3, 2007. In addition, the Bullets shot 66.1 percent from the field, the team's best shooting performance since hitting on 67.4 percent of its shots in a 72-59 victory at Swarthmore College on Jan. 29, 2011. The Orange and Blue shot 50.0 percent (9-for-18) from 3-point range, and they also out-rebounded the Fords 36-20.
Â
Senior forward
Cody Kiefer (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) led the Bullets with 22 points, a season-high eight assists, and six rebounds while making 9 of 11 shots. Senior center
Mlynue Reeves (Washington, D.C./Church Farm School [Pa.]) scored 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting while senior guard
Pete Christ (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) and junior forward
Cameron Stewart (Sydney, Australia/Newington College) added 16 and 15 points, respectively. Stewart shot 6-for-8 from the field.
Â
Senior center
Tanner Kirkpatrick (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) fell just one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds in just 16 minutes off the bench. In addition, freshman guard
Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) dished out a season-high nine assists.
Â
Matt Sherman led the Fords (3-18, 2-12 CC) with 23 points. Kahlil Garnes added 16 points for the visitors while Kyle Goldfarb netted 14 points.
Â
Gettysburg was in control early on, outscoring Haverford 12-2 in the opening three minutes. The lead would hit 20 (25-5) with 13:20 on the clock, as Reeves scored 10 of his points and Kiefer handed out six of his assists in the game-opening run.
Â
Haverford cut the deficit in half (30-20) with 6:02 showing, but the Bullets outscored the Fords 17-7 over the remainder of the period to push the surplus back to 20 (47-27) at the intermission. Christ scored eight points during the spurt, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Â
Christ led all scorers with 14 points at the half while Reeves netted 13.
Â
It was still a 20-point game (51-31) after a Reeves lay-up with 18:11 remaining in the game. However, that's when the Fords embarked on their 29-10 run to climb back into it. Sherman poured in 16 of his points during the stretch, and his lay-up with 10:45 to go made it a one-point game. But at the other end of the floor, Kiefer drained a huge trey to help turn the momentum back in favor of the Bullets. With the shot clock winding down, he accepted a kick-out from Reeves and buried a triple from the left wing, making it 64-60 with 10:21 left.
Â
Haverford twice drew to within two over the next minute-and-a-half, the last time coming on a pair of Garnes free throws that made it 68-66 with 8:53 to go. But that's when Gettysburg used a big 8-0 surge, started and ended by a pair of 3-pointers from sophomore guard
Alec Warren (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), that pushed the lead back into double figures with 6:31 left.
Â
Warren's second triple kicked off an incredible offensive run for the Bullets to end the game, as Gettysburg finished 10-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-6 at the foul line over the final 6:31.
Â
It was a 76-68 game after a pair of Sherman foul shots with 6:46 left, but the Bullets settled any doubt with a 9-0 run that pushed the lead back to 17 with 5:09 to go. Warren capped the spurt with another long jumper, and he would finish with a career-high eight points. The Fords were unable to get closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Â
Gettysburg returns home on Wednesday, when it takes on Dickinson College at 7 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
