ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) blasted a three-run home run to help Gettysburg College hand No. 17 Randolph-Macon its first loss of the season in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday.
Randolph-Macon (11-1) had won its first 11 games of the season, including a 3-0 shutout in the opening game against Gettysburg (2-2). The Bullets put a halt to the winning streak by scoring six unearned runs as part of a 9-6 win in game two.
After being held to just two hits in the first game, the visitors jumped in front early with three runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Junior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) plated the first with a sacrifice fly and after a passed ball allowed another run to score, senior
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Leading 3-1, Gettysburg padded the lead with four runs in the fourth inning. Taylor provided the big blow, smashing a three-run shot to left-center.
The Yellow Jackets scored five runs in their next two at bats, but the Bullets added some insurance with RBI singles by Misurell and freshman
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively.
Sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) improved to 2-0 with the win. Clauser allowed four earned runs on nine hits and struck out one.
Taylor finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in game two. Freshman
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) and junior
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) each scored two runs, while Misurell drove in two runs.
In the opener, Taylor and Folfas were the only Bullets to manage base hits against Candace Whittemore. Whittemore struck out 10 and allowed only three base runners to reach second base.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first run on a single by Sam Scifres in the first inning. Randolph-Macon added an unearned run in both the second and sixth innings.
Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took the loss after giving up one earned run on eight hits and striking out four.
Gettysburg continues its spring break trip with eight games at the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Bullets open the tournament against the University of Wisconsin-Stout and Mount Saint Vincent College on Monday, March 13, at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
