FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Gettysburg College baseball team lost 3-2 on a walk-off single in the opener, then forged a 7-7 tie in the nightcap versus Bethany (W. Va.) College on the opening day of its Spring Break trip to Florida on Sunday.
Â
The two sides combined for 17 hits in the opener, then exploded for 35 hits in the second game, which was called in the middle of the 10th due to a lightning warning and rain.
Â
Junior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) finished 4-for-9 on the day for the Bullets (0-4-1), continuing his hot start at the plate. Probst leads the Bullets with a .524 batting average through the team's first five games.
Â
Senior
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) recorded his 100th career hit with a fourth-inning single in the second game. He became the second Bullet in three games to reach the milestone, joining classmate
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser).
Â
In the opener, senior
Eric Brown (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) pitched six innings and allowed just two runs on nine hits.
Â
Gettysburg led 1-0 in the top of the second when freshman
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) stroked an RBI-single, and the Bullets rallied in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman
Tate Frodsham (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) drew a two-out walk before Gasparro singled. Freshman
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) then singled home Frodsham.
Â
Bethany (3-2-1) answered in the bottom of the inning versus sophomore reliever
Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn./Hall). After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, the Bullets intentionally walked the Bison's cleanup hitter before Tyler Frazee singled in the winning run.
Â
Gasparro and Giovinco each went 2-for-3 in the opener for Gettysburg.
Â
Bethany jumped to an early 5-1 lead in the second game. The Bison plated three in the first and two in the second versus Dobbins, who started on the mound, and freshman reliever
Jack Havard (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan, who entered the game with one out in the second. However, Havard would settle in and allow just two runs over 4 2/3 innings while striking out four.
Â
In the meantime, Gettysburg rallied with a five-run third to assume a 6-5 lead. A pair of errors early in the inning opened the door for the Bullets, who received a two-run single from Frodsham, an RBI-single from Gasparro, and a sacrifice fly from Giovinco.
Â
The Bison went back in front with a two-run sixth, making it 7-6. However, the Bullets tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single from Tom.
Â
Neither side would score the rest of the way, though both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities. Sophomore
Matt Ainsworth (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) spun five innings of scoreless relief for Gettysburg while scattering nine hits and working out of numerous jams.
Â
Bethany's biggest threat came in the top of the ninth, when it had a runner on third with one out. However, that's when Giovinco, the Bullets' shortstop, threw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate for a 6-2 putout. After a single put runners on the corners, Ainsworth induced a pop-out to end the inning.
Â
Ainsworth would also blank the Bison in both the 10th and 11th, leaving a runner on second in both innings.
Â
Gettysburg loaded the bases in both the eighth and the 10th, but two different Bethany relievers put out both threats with a pair of groundouts.
Â
Tom finished 3-for-6 with a pair of runs in the nightcap while Probst was also 3-for-6. Senior
J.J. Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls) went 2-for-5 with a double while Frodsham also collected a pair of hits.
Â
Gettysburg continues its seven-day, 10-game trip on Monday, when it faces Eastern Nazarene University at 10 a.m. and Messiah College at 1 p.m.
