MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg College softball team busted out the bats on its first day at the Fastpitch Dreams Tournament, racking up 21 runs and 35 hits on the way to victories over the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
The top of the order went a combined 9-for-12 with five runs and three RBI as Gettysburg (4-2) took down UW-Stout (1-3) 7-1 in the opening game. The Bullets rapped 21 hits and sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) allowed only one base knock in a 14-0 decision over Mount Saint Vincent (1-1).
Gettysburg fired up the bats going early with four runs in the top of the first against UW-Stout. Sophomore
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) and senior
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) provided the offense with a pair of two-run singles.
Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard through the first four innings. UW-Stout scored a run on a base-loaded hit-by-pitch in the fifth inning, but Reilly silenced the the remaining threat with a strikeout. Only one more runner would reach scoring position in the final two innings for UW-Stout.
Gettysburg padded its lead with a pinch-hit RBI single by junior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) in the fifth. Taylor picked up another RBI on her fourth hit of the game and sophomore
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) plated the final run with a groundout in the sixth inning.
Reilly picked up her first win after allowing just one earned run on eight hits, while striking out eight.
Taylor went 4-for-4 with a run and three RBI, freshman
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) went 3-for-4 with two runs, and senior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Against Mount Saint Vincent, Taylor drove in three of Gettysburg's first four runs with a run-scoring single in the first and a two-run double in the second. The Bullets unloaded in the fourth frame, bringing across 10 runs on 10 hits. Abell, Taylor, and Blasius all posted two hits in the inning with Blasius capping the scoring with a two-run triple to right-center.
A lead-off double to start the game was the only hit surrendered by Clauser. The sophomore improved to 3-0 with only one walk allowed and five strikeouts.
Taylor racked up four more hits against the Dolphins, finishing 4-for-5 with one run and four RBI. Blasius also drove in four on a pair of hits, while Abell went 4-for-5 with three runs and one RBI. Doi scored a run on all three of her base hits. Freshman
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) and
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) combined to go 5-for-5 with three runs and three RBI in the bottom two positions in the batting order.
Gettysburg faces Rutgers-Camden and Keystone College at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively, on Tuesday.
