MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) each twirled shutouts as Gettysburg College added two more victories at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
One day removed from putting up 21 runs in a pair of wins, Gettysburg (6-2) didn't need as much offense behind its dynamic pitching duo. Reilly surrendered only six hits while striking out seven in a 5-0 decision over Rutgers-Camden (4-3). Clauser tossed her second consecutive shutout and fanned a career-high nine in a 3-0 win over Keystone College (1-3).
Reilly set the tone early against Rutgers-Camden, striking out the first five batters that stepped to the plate. She retired the first eight batters before giving up a hit in the third inning.
Gettysburg struck for a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings. Senior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) brought home the first two runs with a single to center field in the third frame. In the fourth, the Bullets tacked on two runs with two outs, scoring the first on a wild pitch and plating the second on a single by freshman
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo).
The Scarlet Raptors nearly reached the scoring column in the sixth after loading the bases with one. Reilly quieted the threat on her own, tossing a grounder back to home for a force out and then striking out the next batter.
Junior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) capped the scoring with a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Doi, freshman
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), and sophomore
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) each went 2-for-4 for the Bullets. Freshman
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) reached base three times via a hit-by-pitch and two walks and she scored two runs.
After tossing a one-hit, five-inning shutout against the College of Mount Saint Vincent yesterday, Clauser was nearly untouchable once again against Keystone. She struck out five of the first six batters she faced and allowed only two base runners to reach second base in the game. Clauser also did not issue a walk on the way to moving to 4-0 this spring.
Abell posted the game's first hit and came around to score on a single by Folfas in the first inning. Gettysburg didn't score again until its final at bat as Folfas picked up another RBI on a double and then scored on a two-bagger by Blasius.
Abell, sophomore
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington), and Folfas each went 2-for-3 against Keystone.
Gettysburg has a day off on Wednesday before resuming play in Myrtle Beach on Thursday. The Bullets face SUNY Canton and Albertus Magnus College at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
