MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) did not allow a hit or a walk and the Gettysburg College defense backed her up with no miscues in the field in recording the second perfect game in program history with a 9-0 decision over SUNY Canton on Thursday.
Reilly set down all 18 batters she faced in six innings of work. She struck out five while inducing eight ground-outs and five fly-outs. After a pair of grounders to second base, the junior right-hander polished off her first career no-hitter with a fly to center field.
It was the 17th no-hitter in program history, but just the second perfect game. Meghan Howlett threw the last perfect outing against Wells College on March 22, 2005.
Gettysburg (8-2) scored runs in all but one inning against Canton (3-2). The Bullets posted three runs in the first frame with sophomore
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) plating two with a double and freshman
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) adding an RBI single.
With the score at 5-0 entering the fifth inning, Jonik tripled in a run before scoring on a passed ball. The Bullets added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Reilly won her third-straight start to move to 3-2 on the year. She has thrown 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings and fanned 20 batters in her last three outings.
Jonik finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Freshman
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) reached base three times via two singles and a walk and scored once.
Gettysburg added its seventh win in a row with a 4-1 decision over Albertus Magnus College Thursday afternoon. Sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) moved to 5-0 this season with only one earned run allowed on three hits. She also struck out six and issued one walk.
The Bullets loaded the bases following two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the second inning. Junior
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) stroked a two-run single to right field and Doi followed up with a single to left to make it 3-0.
Doi posted her third hit of the game in the fifth inning and later reached home on an error to set the final score.
Clauser retired the first seven batters she faced and allowed only one runner to reach scoring position through the first five innings. Albertus Magnus (2-4) tallied its only run on a single by Melissa Castillo in the sixth.
Doi accounted for half of Gettysburg's hits by going 3-for-3.
Gettysburg closes its spring trip against Lycoming College and Mansfield University at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively, on Friday.
