VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Gettysburg College baseball team stayed hot offensively, scoring 18 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Norwich University on the next-to-last day of the team's Spring Break trip to Florida on Friday.
Â
Playing in Holman Stadium, part of "Historic Dodgertown," the Bullets (4-6-1) won the opener 9-4 and captured the nightcap 9-3 while slugging eight extra-base hits, including three home runs. Gettysburg has now scored 28 runs and ripped 36 hits during its current three-game winning streak.
Â
Several Bullets enjoyed big days at the plate, including senior
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central), who went 4-for-5 with five runs and four RBIs to go with a double, triple, and a home run. Junior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) finished 4-for-7 with five runs and a pair of doubles while going 4-for-4 on stolen bases. Senior
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) finished 3-for-6 with four runs, three RBIs and a homer while freshman
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) also homered and drove in three runs.
Â
Senior
Eric Brown (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) worked an eight-hit, seven-inning complete game in the opener before sophomore
Matt Ainsworth (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) worked four-plus inning to pick up the win in the second game.
Â
It was a pitcher's duel early on in the opener, and the Cadets (3-9) led 2-1 through four innings. Anderson singled in a run in the top of the first before Norwich scored twice in the second to take its only lead of the day. However, Brown would settle into a groove and retired 12 of 13 batters from the second through the sixth.
Â
In the meantime, the Bullets broke through with seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Anderson cracked a three-run homer to cap a four-run inning and chase starter Kaleb Smith. Gettysburg added three runs in the sixth, getting a two-run double from Probst and a run-scoring single from freshman
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) that made it 8-2. The Bullets tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, when Anderson led off with a double and scored on a single from junior
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy).
Â
The Cadets scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh, and back-to-back two-out singles put two more runners on base. But Brown ended the game with a groundout.
It was the sixth career complete game for Brown (1-1), who struck out two and did not issue a walk.
Â
Probst finished 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, and two doubles in the opener while Anderson went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.
Â
The Bullets took the lead from the start in the nightcap, scoring three times in the bottom of the first, capped by an RBI-triple from Anderson. Gettysburg added three-spots in both the third and fourth to open up a 9-0 advantage.
Â
Gasparro capped the third with a two-run homer – the first long ball of his career – before Tom cracked a two-run shot of his own in the fourth. Gasparro drove home the team's final run of the day with a double in the fourth.
Â
Making his first collegiate start, Ainsworth was in control early on, blanking the Cadets on four hits through the opening four innings. The Bullets carried their 9-0 lead into the fifth, when Norwich finally reached Ainsworth with three runs on four hits. Freshman
Jack Havard (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) came on to get the final out of the fifth, then closed out the game with a pair of scoreless innings.
Â
Tom finished 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, Anderson scored three runs, Probst stole three bases in the second game.
Â
Ainsworth (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three over 4 2/3 innings. Havard yielded just one hit while fanning three over 2 1/3 innings of work.
Â
Gettysburg concludes its trip on Saturday, when it plays Kenyon College in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
