Stopyra, Probst Power Bullets in Home Opener

Gettysburg wins sixth straight

Chase Stopyra spun the first nine-inning shutout by a Bullet in nearly two years.
Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Chase Stopyra (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) fired a three-hit, nine-inning shutout while junior Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Gettysburg College baseball team to a 10-0 victory over Penn State Altoona in its home opener at a blustery Kirchhoff Field on Wednesday.

The Bullets (7-6-1), who won their sixth game in a row, captured their home opener for the fourth straight season and posted their fourth consecutive win over the Lions (8-10).

It was the longest career outing and the first career shutout for Stopyra (1-0), who faced just two batters over the minimum. It was also the first nine-inning shutout by a Bullet since Eric Hungerford '15 tossed a six-hitter versus Dickinson on April 7, 2015. After retiring the first nine batters of the game, Stopyra yielded just three singles and a walk while striking out a career-high seven. Of his 113 pitches, 79 were strikes.

Stopyra was backed by an error-less defense to go with a 14-hit attack. Leading the way was Probst, who went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple while posting his career-high for hits.

Eight of nine starters hit safely for the Bullets, including freshman Tate Frodsham (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North), who went 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a double. Senior J.J. Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs while junior Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) also scored twice.

After Probst led off the bottom of the first with a single, senior Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) provided Stopyra with all the run support he would need. Tom lifted a fly ball into a ferocious wind blowing out to right, sending it over the rightfielder's head for an RBI-triple. He would score on a ground ball and the Bullets led 2-0 after the first.

The Bullets pushed across three runs in the fourth versus Altoona starter Jared Dailey. Frodsham ripped a shot down the rightfield line that rolled out of play for an RBI ground-rule double. Lucido was called back to third after scoring from first on the play, but both Frodsham and Lucido would score on a wild pitch that made it 5-0.

Gettysburg put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring five times in an inning that included four hits, a walk, a hit batsman, a passed ball, and a wild pitch. An RBI-single from Probst chased Dailey (3-1), who yielded all 10 Bullet runs on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings. A pair of Lion relievers blanked Gettysburg over the final 3 2/3 innings.

In the meantime, Stopyra was perfect through his first three innings, when he struck out three. Leadoff hitter Aidan Plants led off the fourth with a single, but Stopyra promptly induced preseason All-American Jim Shomberg into a 6-3 double play before getting another groundout.

Stopyra worked a three-up, three-down fifth before facing his only test in the sixth, when the Lions (8-10) had two on with no out following a single and a walk. But Stopyra coaxed another double play, starting a 1-6-3 twin killing on a comebacker to the mound. He rolled up another groundout to end the inning and strand a runner on third. Stopyra would retire 10 in a row before yielding a pinch-hit infield single with two outs in the ninth before completing his masterpiece with a flyout to center.

Gettysburg continues its four-game homestand on Thursday, when it hosts Penn State York at 3:30 p.m.in another non-conference outing.
