Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) totaled three goals and two assists to lead second-ranked Gettysburg College past No. 8 York (Pa.) College 9-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Clark Field.
Each of the last two meetings between Gettysburg (7-0) and York (4-2) came down to the wire and resulted in one-goal decisions, but Wednesday's affair was largely controlled by the hosts. With the score tied 1-1 after 25 minutes, the Bullets seized momentum beginning with a free-position goal by junior
Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) at 4:51.
The next 1:47 belonged to Colson. The sophomore midfielder grabbed three draw controls and scored three consecutive goals with the first coming just 11 seconds after Landry's tally. Colson's third goal was on a free-position shot and gave Gettysburg a 5-1 lead at halftime.
Colson opted to be a passer early in the second half, dishing assists on a pair of highlight-reel goals. She found junior
Maggie Welsh (Rye, N.H./Holy Child) near the cage and despite being closely checked by a defender, Welsh whipped a no-look shot into the net at 24:35.
After York pulled to 6-4 with back-to-back goals, Colson drew a foul just outside the eight-meter arc and on the ensuing restart, flipped a quick pass to her left for junior
Katie Willis (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Willis' shot rocketed past the Spartan goalie at 20:50.
Gettysburg dominated possession of the ball for most of the next 10 minutes before Landry tacked on an unassisted tally at 9:05. Meghan Fox cut the deficit to 8-5 with 6:57 to play, but once again, the sure-handed Bullets controlled possession over the next five minutes until Welsh flipped in another no-look goal off a feed by senior
Caroline Jaeger (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) with 1:56 left.
Senior
Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) polished off the victory with her sixth save on a shot by Melissa Meehling with one minute left. The win was the 53rd of Keeler's career, leaving the goalie just five shy of Kristen Krammer's '10 program record.
Gettysburg led in shots (18-16) and ground balls (11-9), while York held an 11-5 advantage in draw controls. The Bullets were perfect in clearing the ball (15-15) and posted a season-low seven turnovers.
In addition to the five points, Colson tallied three ground balls and three draw controls. Willis, Landry, and Welsh all finished with two goals. Sophomore
Brooke Holechek (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while seniors
Katelyn Neillands (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and
Macauley Mikes (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each corralled two ground balls.
Gettysburg opens its Centennial Conference slate against Ursinus College this Saturday, March 25, at 1 p.m.
