SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team pulled out a pair of close decisions to complete a sweep of Swarthmore College in its Centennial Conference opener at Clothier Field on Saturday.
Gettysburg (12-4, 2-0 CC) brought across the game-winning run in the top of the sixth on the way to a 3-2 decision over Swarthmore (9-7, 0-2 CC) in the opener. The nightcap also came down to the late innings with the Bullets scoring in their final two trips to the plate for a 4-2 win.
Freshman
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) led off the first game with a double to left. After advancing on a wild pitch, Doi came home on a single by fellow first-year
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) for the game's first run.
An error put Swarthmore's first batter on base in the home half of the first. After a sacrifice and walk, Emilie Morse brought in the lead runner with a double. The second runner was gunned down at home plate to keep the score tied.
The Bullets pushed back in front in the top of the third. Doi reached on an error and senior
Jamie Abell (Glen Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) followed up with a single to left field. The duo pulled off a double steal, which set the stage for Doi to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington).
Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was dealing inside the pitcher's circle for Gettysburg, allowing just two walks and a single from the second inning to the sixth. Meanwhile, Gettysburg tacked on a final run on a groundout by pinch-hitter
Mattea Ghaffary (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) in the sixth inning.
The Garnet picked up one run in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners in scoring position, but Reilly slammed the door with a grounder to third.
Reilly improved to 5-3 after surrendering just four hits and striking out five. Both Swarthmore runs were unearned, pushing the junior's streak of games without an earned run to five games.
Gettysburg stranded runners in each of the first three innings before bringing across a run in each of the final four frames in game two. The Bullets scored on a triple by senior
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) in the fourth and a single by Taylor in the fifth, but Swarthmore answered in the bottom half of both of those innings to tie the game 2-2.
The visitors set up for a big sixth inning with each of the first three batters reaching base. Ghaffary brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Garnet managed to avoid more damage with a grounder to the circle and a line out to third base.
Misurell padded the advantage with another extra-base hit in the seventh, smacking a two-out double to left field to bring home junior
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall).
Sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) did not allow a hit over the final 2 2/3 innings on the way to picking up her seventh win of the season. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Abell picked up two hits and a walk, while Misurell finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) posted three singles in four trips to the plate. Leonardo didn't submit an official at bat in the nightcap, instead drawing two walks and getting hit by a pitch on the way to scoring three runs.
Gettysburg heads to Dickinson College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 28, at 5 p.m.
