GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team was on target in its Centennial Conference opener against Ursinus College as the second-ranked Bullets defeated the Bears 19-4 at Clark Field Saturday.
Gettysburg (8-0, 1-0 CC) only missed five shots in the contest, including just one in the second half. The Bullets didn't dash away from Ursinus (3-5, 0-1 CC) early on, however, as the Bears pulled to 3-2 on a free-position shot by Lindsey Grabell at 16:48 in the first half.
Ursinus had a shot to tie the game, but Franny Liberatoscioli's free-position shot hit the post and bounced to freshman
Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) for a ground ball. Gettysburg cleared the ball up the field and junior
Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) kicked off a big scoring run for the hosts with a free-position goal at 15:20.
Gettysburg missed only one shot during an 11-0 run over the next 24 minutes. Nine players hit the back of the net, including two goals apiece by senior
Caroline Jaeger (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon), junior
Maggie Welsh (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child), and Patterson. The defense did its part for the hosts, holding the Bears to just four shots during the goal streak.
Sophomore
Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) connected on two of Gettysburg's final four goals with the last giving her team an 18-4 lead with 8:03 remaining.
Gettysburg finished with advantages in shots (24-11) and ground balls (9-5). After trailing Ursinus 5-4 in draw controls, the Bullets won 14 of the next 16 draws to finish with an 18-7 lead.
A dozen Bullets hit the scoring column with Jaeger and Patterson each finishing with a hat trick. Welsh and senior
Emma Christie (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) each tallied two goals and one assist. Landry dished out four assists to go with her one goal. Freshman
Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) recorded one goal, one assist, and three draw controls. Junior
Ali Gorab (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) and freshman
Claire Macatee (Street, Md./North Harford) each procured three draw controls, with Macatee also grabbing two ground balls.
Senior
Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) played the first half in goal and finished with three saves. Sophomore
Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) played the entire second half and stopped one shot.
