READING, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end, but salvaged a split in a non-conference doubleheader at Penn State Berks on Sunday.
Â
The Bullets (11-7-1) rallied in the opener, tying the game in the top of the seventh, only to see Berks (5-8) hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to secure a 5-4 victory. However, Gettysburg bounced back with a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
Â
Junior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) continued his incredible offensive surge, belting a home run in each game. He has now cranked five long balls for the season, including four in his last five games alone. Probst finished the day 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBIs while extending his hitting streak to 22 games, dating back to last season.
Â
Senior
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) also had a big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with three doubles and three runs scored. On the mound, sophomore
Matt Ainsworth (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) threw his first career complete game, scattering 10 hits over seven innings.
Â
The Bullets turned in an outstanding performance defensively, going all 14 innings without an error.
Â
In the opener, the Nittany Lions scored three runs in a three-hit third versus freshman starter
Danny Brace (Berwyn, Pa./Devon Prep) to assume a 3-0 lead. But the Bullets came back with a single run in each of their last four innings. Tom doubled and scored on a single from classmate
J.J. Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) in the fourth before Probst went deep for a solo shot in the fifth, making it a 3-2 game.
Â
The Lions answered with a run in the fifth but Gettysburg pulled to within 4-3 in the sixth. Tom and Lucido replicated the fourth inning, with Tom again leading off with a double and scoring on another Lucido single.
Â
Freshman
Jack Havard (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) came on to throw a scoreless sixth before the Bullets pulled even in the seventh on four walks. Lucido walked with the bases loaded to make it a 4-4 game.
In the bottom of the frame, No. 3 hitter Toby Welk sparked Berks with a leadoff double. After an intentional walk and a bunt single loaded the bases, a fly ball to right brought home Welk with the winning run. It was the Bullets' fourth one-run loss this season and their third walk-off loss.
Â
Probst and Tom each finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs in the opener while Lucido went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Â
Brace came away with a no-decision, yielding four runs on six hits over five innings. Havard (0-1) was charged with the loss.
Â
The Bullets did all of their damage in the early going of the nightcap, when they scored all seven of their runs during the first three innings. Junior
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) capped a three-run first with a two-RBI single before Probst slammed a two-run homer to left-center in the second, staking Ainsworth to a 5-0 cushion.
Â
The Lions scored once in the bottom of the inning but Gettysburg answered with two in the top of the third, extending its advantage to 7-1.
Â
Ainsworth (2-0) did not allow an extra-base hit in the second game, and he erased a pair of runners with a double play in the fourth and a pick-off in the sixth.
Â
Ainsworth recorded the first two outs in the seventh, but Berks refused to go away. The Lions stroked four straight singles, scoring a run and loading the bases for cleanup hitter Zach Reiss. But Ainsworth escaped with a flyout to nail down his second career win. For the game, he did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Freshman
Tate Frodsham (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) led the Bullets at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Sneed and Gasparro contributed two hits apiece.
Â
The Bullets continue their five-day, six-game stretch on Monday, when they visit Penn State Mont Alto in a make-up game at 3:30 p.m.
