Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg erased a late four-run deficit and came away with an 8-8 tie versus Penn State Mont Alto in a non-conference baseball game that was called after 10 innings due to darkness Thursday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
Â
The Bullets (12-7-2) trailed 8-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth, when it scored three runs. Gettysburg pushed across the tying run in the ninth but was unable to put a runner on base in the 10th before the game was halted well over three hours after it started.
Â
Junior
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) led the Bullets at the plate, finishing 3-for-4, while freshman
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Freshman
Tyler Mitchell (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and junior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) tripled to extend his hitting streak to 24 – the longest by a Bullet since a school-record 37-gamer by Al Posch '14 that overlapped the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Â
Five Gettysburg pitchers entered the game, including sophomore
Will Gibson (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson), who made a strong collegiate debut. Gibson fired 3 1/3 hitless innings while striking out five to close out the game for the Bullets. Sophomore
Jack Havard (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) tossed five innings of relief and yielded just two runs on three hits.
Â
After Mont Alto (2-12-1) scored once in the top of the first, Probst tripled off the leftfield fence to start the bottom of the inning for Gettysburg. He would score on a groundout to make it 1-1, and Gettysburg would push across three runs in the fourth, which included a two-run single from Mitchell.
Â
The Lions came back with seven unanswered runs, scoring two in the fifth, four in the sixth, and one in the seventh to assume their 8-4 advantage. Mont Alto was poised to strike for more in the seventh, but Gibson came on to induce an inning-ending flyout with runners on first and second. He would allow just a pair of walks the rest of the way.
Â
The Bullets made the bulk of their rally in the eight, scoring three times on three hits, two walks, and an error. Sneed led off with a single and moved to second on an error before scoring on a single from freshman
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School), which chased starter William LaRussa. Freshman
Tate Frodsham (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) and Probst would each draw a walk before Giovinco ripped a two-run single to make it an 8-7 game.
Â
Gettysburg pulled even with an unearned run in the ninth. Senior
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) led off with a single and was bunted to second and third by Sneed and Gasparro before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Frodsham.
Â
Gibson worked a three-up, three-down 10th, but so did Lion reliever Jeremiah Younker in the bottom of the inning as Gettysburg settled for its second tie of the year.
Â
The Bullets open Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when they visit Muhlenberg at 12:30 in a doubleheader.
