GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Dickinson jumped to a 5-0 first-inning lead and the Red Devils handed Gettysburg a 9-2 setback in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

It was more than offense for Dickinson starting pitcher Billy O'Neil, who blanked Gettysburg over the first six innings. Freshman
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) broke up the shutout in the seventh with a two-run, line-drive homer to left that made it 8-2.

Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) went 2-for-4 with a double for the Bullets (18-12-1, 6-5 CC) while freshman
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Princeton Day School) also finished with a pair of hits for Gettysburg.

Sophomore
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) had the longest outing out of the Bullets five pitchers, tossing 4 1/3 innings while allowing just one run on three hits and three walks. He struck out a season-high six batters.

O'Neil (7-1), who entered the day leading the Centennial Conference in wins, left after seven innings, yielding just five hits and one walk while striking out five.

Dickinson (19-14, 6-5 CC) picked up its first win over the Bullets since a 5-1 victory on April 5, 2012, snapping an eight-game losing streak to Gettysburg.

Freshman
Jack Havard (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) made his second collegiate start for the Bullets and ran into trouble after striking out the leadoff hitter. After a hit batsman and a walk, Dickinson scored twice on a single and a groundout. No. 6 hitter Pat Davis then lined a two-run homer to left, making it a 4-0 game before the Red Devils pushed across an unearned run on two singles and an error. Havard (1-2) was then relieved by Wortmann, who came on to get the final out of the inning.

Wortmann was in command over the next three innings, when he yielded just a single and a walk while fanning the side in the third. Dickinson finally reached him with one run in the fifth on two singles and a pair of walks, making it 6-0.

O'Neil, meanwhile, two-hit Gettysburg over the first five innings. Probst singled leading off the sixth, but O'Neil promptly induced a 6-4-3 double play. With Gettysburg trailing 8-0 in the seventh, Giovinco singled before Gasparro drilled his second career homer. But after a passed ball on a strikeout allowed a runner to reach, O'Neil retired his final two batters of the day.

Dickinson set the final score with a single run in the eighth. For the game, the Red Devils outhit Gettysburg 11-6.

Will Gibson (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) also pitched two innings of relief for the Bullets while freshman
Will Valentine (McLean, Va./Potomac School) and senior
Eric Brown (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) threw one frame apiece. Brown tossed a three-up, three-down ninth.
