ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team earned a doubleheader split in its Centennial Conference (CC) opener on Sunday at Muhlenberg.
Â
The Bullets (13-8-2, 1-1 CC) rallied for a 3-2 win in the opener behind a six-hit complete game from junior
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield). Gettysburg came from behind again in the nightcap, cutting a five-run deficit down to one and putting the tying run on third in the ninth. But the Mules prevailed 6-5.
Â
Junior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) hit safely in both games to extend his hitting streak to 26 games, which ties him for the fourth-longest in Centennial Conference history.
Â
In the opener, Muhlenberg (10-9, 1-1 CC) assumed an early 2-0 lead when it pushed across a pair of runs in the first. But DeMartino would blank the Mules the rest of the way and retired seven in a row from the second through the fourth, when he worked out of a jam. With runners on first and second and one out, he induced a pair of flyouts to get out of the inning.
Â
The Bullets reached Mule starter Sam Kasten with an unearned run in the sixth. Seniors
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) stroked back-to-back one-out singles before Tom scored on a two-out throwing error by the catcher.
Â
Gettysburg capped its comeback with single runs in the seventh and the ninth, with freshman
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) starting both rallies when he was hit by a pitch with two outs. In the seventh, he was chased home on a double from Probst into the left-center gap. Then in the ninth, he was hit by reliever RJ Hennessy before Probst followed up with a single. Gasparro would score the go-ahead run when junior
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) reached on an infield error.
Â
In the meantime, DeMartino was cruising late in the game and retired 11 in a row at one point. The Mules threatened in the ninth, however, putting runners on first and second with two outs before DeMartino coaxed a groundout to end the game.
Â
It was the fourth career complete game for DeMartino (3-0), who scattered six hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Â
Kasten worked seven innings and came away with a no-decision for Muhlenberg. He allowed just two runs (one earned) and struck out nine over seven innings. Hennessy (2-2) was charged with the loss, yielding just an unearned run on one hit over the last two innings.
Â
The Bullets never led in the nightcap after Robbie Hopes blasted a leadoff home run off senior
Eric Brown (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) in the second. The Mules pushed across another run later in the inning before No. 9 hitter Stephen Koes provided the big blow with a three-run homer in the fourth, making it 5-0. Brown (2-2) was relieved by senior
Chase Stopyra (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), who retired the first eight batters he faced, allowing the Bullets to pull to within a run.
Â
The rally started with a three-run fifth, when freshman
Tate Frodsham (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) and Gasparro hit back-to-back singles before Probst banged a two-run triple. Sneed followed up with an RBI-single to make it 5-3.
Â
Anderson led off the sixth with a walk and stole second before scoring on a single from freshman
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) that chased starter Timmy Pilrun. Frodsham followed up with a single, but reliever Ryan Kaveric escaped with a groundout.
Â
Gettysburg would threaten in each of the last three innings as well. In the seventh, the Bullets had runners on second and third before Kaveric induced an inning-ending groundout. Then in the eighth, Giovinco stroked a one-out double but was left at second after reliever Christopher Bunero struck out two in a row.
Â
Muhlenberg added a big insurance run in the bottom of the inning, when Hopes was hit with a pitch, then moved up to second on a failed pickoff attempt. He came around to score on a single from No. 6 hitter Thomas Yohe, but Stopyra got a pair of flyouts to prevent further damage.
Â
Sneed sparked another Gettysburg rally in the ninth with a one-out bunt single. Tom and Anderson loaded the bases with back-to-back singles before senior
J.J. Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly to right then moved Tom to third. But Bunero struck out the final batter to record his fourth save of the year.
Â
Frodsham and Giovinco each went 3-for-4 in the nightcap while Sneed also had a pair of hits. Stopyra allowed just an unearned run on two hits and no walks while striking out three over the final 4 2/3 innings.
Â
Pilrun (1-1) earned the win for Muhlenberg, yielding four runs on seven hits while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings. Bunero allowed one run on four hits while striking out three over the final two frames.
Â
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall at 3:30 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
