Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Chase Stopyra (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) registered another outstanding pitching performance, tossing eight scoreless innings as the Gettysburg College baseball team blanked McDaniel College 6-0 in a Centennial Conference (CC) game Wednesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
Â
With three conference games remaining, the Bullets (21-13-2, 9-6 CC) now find themselves alone in second place in the Centennial standings. Gettysburg and Ursinus entered the day tied for second place, but Ursinus had its CC tilt at Muhlenberg rained out.
Â
Stopyra (4-0) scattered five hits, walked none, and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts. It was the fourth time this season that he worked at least eight innings while allowing no more than one run. Stopyra entered the game as the conference leader in ERA, which now stands at 1.15.
Â
Senior
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) helped nail down Gettysburg's sixth shutout of the season, firing a three-up, three-down ninth while striking out two.
Â
Senior
Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) finished 3-for-4 at the plate for the Bullets while classmate
Will Anderson (Long Valley, Pa./West Morris Central) was 2-for-4.
Â
McDaniel (13-19, 5-10 CC) threatened in the first, when it had runners on first and second with two outs, but Stopyra struck out a batter looking to end the inning.
Â
Junior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) supplied all the offense Stopyra would need when he blasted a solo home run to leftfield on the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning versus McDaniel starter Zach Fortuna. The majestic drive was the team-leading sixth long ball of the season for Probst, who broke the single-season school record for total bases with 104. He surpassed the former mark of 101 set by
Al Posch '14 in 2013.
Â
The Green Terror also had a runner in scoring position in the second after Chris Morris led off with a single and was bunted to second. But he was left stranded when Stopyra caught two more batters looking.
Â
Gettysburg opened up some breathing room with a three-run fourth, when Anderson, Tom, and senior
J.J. Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) led off with three straight singles to load the bases. With the infield drawn in, Fortuna would induce three straight ground balls, the first resulting in a 5-2 putout at the plate. Freshman
Tate Frodsham (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North) then reached on a slow roller to the first baseman, who was unable to cut down Tom at the plate. Freshman
Tyler Mitchell (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) beat out a potential double-play ball, allowing Lucido to score, before a throwing error by the catcher brought home freshman
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) with the final run of the inning.
Â
McDaniel placed a runner on third in both the fourth and the fifth, but Stopyra worked out of both jams, getting back-to-back groundouts in the fourth before Sneed snared a line drive at third base to end the fifth.
Â
Stopyra was perfect in the sixth and seventh and retired seven batters in a row at one point. He allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, but went on to retire the side and exited after throwing exactly 100 pitches.
Â
Gettysburg tacked on a pair of runs with a three-hit eighth inning, getting singles from Anderson, Tom, and Frodsham.
Â
Fortuna (3-7) threw six innings for McDaniel, yielding four runs (three earned) on six hits. Will Strauss finished 2-for-4 for the Green Terror.
Gettysburg and McDaniel conclude their season series on Friday in Westminster with another nine-inning game.
