Bullets Inch Closer to CC Playoff Berth

Connor Tom broke open a 2-2 tie with his seventh-inning grand slam at McDaniel.
Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior Connor Tom (Reinholds, Pa./Conrad Weiser) broke the game open with a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning, sparking a late offensive surge as Gettysburg secured a 14-6 Centennial Conference (CC) victory at McDaniel Friday afternoon.

It was just a 2-2 game heading into the seventh before Tom's blast. The Bullets (22-13-2, 10-6 CC) put it out reach with a seven-run eighth and another run in the ninth to make it 14-2.

McDaniel (13-20, 5-11 CC) set the final score with four runs off three relievers in the bottom of the ninth.

Gettysburg now finds itself alone in second place in the Centennial Conference standings heading into the final day of the regular season.

Tom finished with five RBIs while freshman Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) helped fuel Gettysburg's big eighth inning with a three-run homer. Junior Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) and senior J.J. Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's) added two hits apiece for the Bullets.

Junior Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) fired 7 1/3 innings to earn the pitching win for Gettysburg. DeMartino (5-1) allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out four to earn the victory.

Kasey Nelson went 3-for-4 for McDaniel while Jordan Rhodes (2-3) threw 6 2/3 innings, yielding six runs on six hits.

The Bullets never trailed after scoring twice in the top of the third, with junior Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) supplying an RBI-double. The Green Terror rallied with single runs in the fourth and sixth to pull even at 2-2.

Freshman Banks Northington (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) sparked Gettysburg in the seventh, leading off with a pinch-hit single. Probst singled later in the inning before senior Will Anderson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Tom then stepped to the plate and delivered his second home run of the season, a straightaway shot that sailed well over 400 feet.

DeMartino stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the inning before the Bullets hung up their seven-spot. Sophomore Brendan Wright (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) got things started with a double before Anderson singled home a run. Tom drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 8-2 before Lucido drilled a two-run single. Gasparro followed up with his three-run shot – his third long ball of the season – to cap the big inning.

McDaniel sent 10 runners to the plate in the ninth, when sophomore Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) recorded the final out.

Gettysburg closes out its regular season on Saturday, when it hosts Haverford College at 12:30 p.m. on Senior Day and Take ALS Yard Day.
