GETTYSBURG, Pa. – McDaniel College rallied in both ends of a doubleheader against Gettysburg College before darkness forced a suspension of play at Bobby Jones Field.
Gettysburg (13-8, 2-3 CC) led the opening game 1-0 before McDaniel (11-8, 5-0 CC) tied the game in the top of the seventh and went on to win 2-1 in 10 innings. The Green Terror picked up a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the nightcap 2-2 before play was stopped because of darkness.
Gettysburg tallied the day's first run as freshman
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) led off game one with a triple over the right fielder's head. She came around to score on a double by fellow first-year
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy).
Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and McDaniel hurler Valerie Lamb cruised through most of the game. Lamb didn't allow another runner past second base until the seventh inning, while Reilly didn't allow a base runner to reach scoring position through the first six frames.
The Green Terror rallied with two outs in the seventh inning as Olivia Kipe and Alicia Wagner posted back-to-back singles. Jamie Weisser slapped a single to center field that allowed Kipe to score. The pinch-runner also tried to score after the throw bounced away near the plate, but Jonik recovered the ball quickly and flipped it to junior
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) for the tag at home.
The Bullets nearly ended the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the potential game-winning run was tagged out at home to end the frame.
Gettysburg kept McDaniel off the board with another play at the plate in the top of the ninth inning. The Green Terror eventually broke through with the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the 10th frame as an error allowed the lead runner to score.
The hosts advanced the runner to third in their half of the 10th, but Fiona Johnson posted a strikeout and grounder to shortstop to close the game and earn the save.
Reilly (5-5) took the loss after scattering eight hits and allowing one earned run with six strikeouts. Jonik went 2-for-4 for the Bullets.
Lamb picked up the win with four strikeouts and seven hits allowed. Payton Lewis and Kipe each went 2-for-4.
Game two was cruising along with Gettysburg picking up single runs on a double by junior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) in the third and a single by freshman
Mattea Ghaffary (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) in the sixth inning.
Sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) eased through the first six innings and retired 11 in a row heading into the seventh. McDaniel had the rally cap in place as Hishon led off with a double to left-center and Kipe blasted 0-1 offering over the left-field fence to tie the game.
After Gettysburg went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh, the umpires and coaches decided to suspend play because of encroaching darkness. According to the Centennial Conference manual, the game will be replayed in its entirety at the original site, if deemed necessary by the Executive Director. Additional clarification will be provided about the result after consultation with the conference office.
