GETTYSBURG, Pa. – For the second year in a row, overtime was needed to decide a winner between the Gettysburg College and Lebanon Valley College women's soccer teams.
Unfortunately for the Bullets, the end result was identical to last season, as the Flying Dutchmen came away with a 1-0 non-conference victory Friday evening at Clark Field.
Teanna Shutt scored in the 98th minute as LVC spoiled Gettysburg's season opener for the second year in a row.
Freshman
Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) turned in a strong collegiate debut in goal for the Bullets, making four saves while facing 12 shots.
Emma Strickler stopped two shots to earn the victory in goal for the Dutchmen, who were also playing their season opener.
Neither side was able to generate many scoring opportunities in the opening half, when the Bullets outshot LVC 3-2.
The action started to pick up in the second stanza, and the Bullets were able to dodge a threat in the 53rd minute. Rileigh Jo Evitts ripped a shot off the crossbar for before Cheyenne Scott followed up with a quick rebound for LVC. However, Gettysburg freshman defender
Emma Richart (San Mateo, Calif./Menlo School) was there to deflect the ball away to keep the Dutchmen off the scoreboard.
Strickler made an outstanding stop in the 66th when, after an LVC yellow card, sophomore
Brooke Priddy (Darnestown, Md./Bullis School) was awarded a free kick from the left side. Her shot was on target, but Strickler dove to her left to slap the ball away.
In overtime, Priddy had another free kick sail just high of the goal in the 94th minute. Then with less than three minutes left in the extra session, Gettysburg was awarded a goal kick. Evitts came up with a loose ball and flicked a pass to Shutt, who dribbled to the top of the box and slotted a shot inside the left post for the game-winner.
The Dutchmen finished with advantages in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (3-2).
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Wednesday, when it visits Stevenson University in another non-conference outing starting at 7 p.m.
