GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) tipped in the game-winning goal one minute into the second overtime and the Gettysburg College field hockey team rallied for a 3-2 non-conference victory over Alvernia University in its home opener Tuesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Â
Senior
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) came through in the clutch for the Bullets (1-3), making six of her 10 saves in the first overtime, including swatting away a penalty-stroke attempt just over three minutes into the extra session.
Â
Sophomore
Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) finished with one goal and one assist for Gettysburg, which captured its first double-overtime victory since a 2-1 win over McDaniel in the 2005 Centennial Conference semifinals.
Â
Andrea Wysocki posted one goal and one assist for Alvernia (1-4) while Emma Beamesderfer made five saves.
Â
The Bullets (1-3) trailed 2-1 with just over a minute left in regulation. But junior defender
Brooke Matthews (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) recovered a ball in Gettysburg's defensive end and pushed it upfield, where Soares dribbled into the left side of the circle. She flicked a pass to freshman
Megan Kratz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), who from the left post tipped in a shot for her first collegiate goal.
Â
The Golden Wolves turned up the pressure in the extra session, when it outshot Gettysburg 10-1. But they were unable to dent Mowery, who posted her 15th career 10-save performance.
Â
The Bullets nearly won it on the first shot of the second overtime, when freshman
Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) had a shot slam off the right post. But Gettysburg recovered the loose ball and received possession following an Alvernia foul. Then on the restart, senior
Lily Neibart (Morristown, N.J./Pingry School) dribbled five yards to the right elbow and rifled a well-struck ball toward the goal. Bertrando was there to get a stick on it, flipping a shot past the goalie and into the cage. It was also Bertrando's first goal as a Bullet.
Â
Alvernia scored just over 15 minutes into the game when Wysocki rebounded a loose ball following a defensive save from Mathews. The Golden Wolves held a 7-4 shot advantage in the opening half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime intermission.
Â
Gettysburg found an offensive spark in the second half, when it outshot Alvernia 9-2. Soares pulled the Bullets even with 23:31 left, knocking home a loose ball from six yards out following a Beamesderfer save on a shot from junior
Victoria Umbach (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan). But the Wolves went back in front with 18:23 remaining on a goal from Malorie McCoy.
Â
The Bullets survived a scare when Alvernia hit the post with five and a half minutes left, setting up Kratz' heroics.
Â
For the game, Alvernia finished with a 19-16 shot advantage. Both sides earned six penalty corners.
