Bullets Upended in Overtime at Washington

Shorewomen score game-winner in 87th minute

CHESTERTOWN, Md.Washington College scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to sneak by visiting Gettysburg College 3-2 in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

Gettysburg (1-4, 0-1 CC) played in its third consecutive overtime affair this season. After Washington (3-3, 1-0 CC) took the lead initially on a goal by Grace Steele at 2:19, freshman Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) tacked on a pair of scores to put the Bullets in front. The first came off a pass from senior Lindsay Kraus (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) in the ninth minute, while the second was assisted by senior Lily Neibart (Morristown, N.J./Pingry) in the 29th minute.

The Orange and Blue tried to add to the advantage early in the second half, but Washington goalie Morgan Domanico posted a pair of saves on shots by Betrando and freshman Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township).

The Shorewomen found the equalizer in the 59th minute when Kailyn Brandt dribbled into the scoring area and flipped a reverse shot into the cage.

The goalies came up big in the final minutes of regulation with Domanico posting two more saves and Gettysburg senior Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) swatting away a penalty stroke to maintain the tie.

The two teams combined for more saves in the first overtime (10) than in both regulation periods combined (9). Mowery recorded four during a two-minute span early in the period. Freshman Megan Kratz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) put a shot on goal that was stopped from going in by defender Sophie Grabiec in the 83rd minute and Mowery added two more saves in the final two minutes of the extra session.

Washington pressed the action early in the second overtime, taking four shots and forcing a penalty corner. After back-to-back saves by Mowery, Emily Pantazes corralled the loose ball in front of the cage and slipped it home for the winning tally.

Washington held a 21-19 lead in shots and an 11-6 advantage in corners.

Mowery picked up 11 saves for the Bullets, while Domanico managed nine stops.
