GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team improved to 10-0 this fall with a quick sweep of visiting York (Pa.) College in a non-conference meeting inside Bream Gym Wednesday night.
After dropping the previous five meetings with York (6-4), four of which came in five sets, Gettysburg raced past the visitors with scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-20. It was the Bullets' first sweep in the series since 2011.
Gettysburg only trailed in the second set when it fell behind 20-18. The deficit was short-lived as the hosts stormed back and turned in the set's final three points, ending with a kill by sophomore
Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park).
The victory was a well-balanced effort by the team with five players connecting on at least five kills. Senior
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) and sophomore
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each posted seven kills, while freshman
Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) logged six kills. Fletcher and senior
Lauren Godshalk (Wester Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) each finished with five kills.
Senior
Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) accounted for half of the team's six aces as well as posting 23 assists and 12 digs. Stranick finished with nine digs and Weikert put up eight, while senior libero
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) logged seven digs. Fletcher posted three total blocks.
Gettysburg opens its Centennial Conference schedule this Saturday at Washington College. The Bullets face the Shorewomen at noon before taking on Rosemont College in a non-conference match up at 2 p.m.
