Esposito Scores a Pair as Bullets Win at York

Defense Holds Spartans to Two Shots on Goal

YORK, Pa. – Junior Samantha Esposito (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) scored a goal in each half, leading the Gettysburg College women's soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory at York (Pa.) College Wednesday evening.

One game after posting a double-overtime shutout at Elizabethtown, the Bullets (2-1-1) turned in another stellar defensive performance, allowing just two shots on goal. Both teams finished with 11 total shots on the night.

Esposito registered her second career two-goal game; ironically, she also scored twice in Gettysburg's 3-0 win over York last season.

Freshman Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) needed to make two saves to earn her second-straight shutout.

Jess Wieber made two saves in the first half for York (0-4) before Sydney Kahn came on in the second half and turned aside three shots.

Esposito struck first in the 23rd minute, when she intercepted a misplayed ball by the goalie at the top of the box before shooting it into an open net for her first tally of the season.

Both teams attempted five shots in the first half, although the Bullets did not allow a shot on goal in the opening stanza.

Esposito set the final score in the 54th minute on a goal set up by junior Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who rocketed a shot off the crossbar. Esposito collected the loose ball and again deposited it into an open net.

The Bullets placed three more shots on goal the rest of the way – two by sophomore Isabel Klatt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and one by senior Maddie Heaney (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) – but all three were saved by Kahn.

Sammon made both of her saves in the second half – one in the 52nd minute and another on a header in the 81st minute.

Gettysburg plays the fourth game of its five-match road trip when it plays Washington College on Saturday at 4 p.m. in its Centennial Conference opener.
