GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg outshot Lebanon Valley 14-5, but the Flying Dutchmen scored a pair of second-half goals to hand the Bullets their first loss of the season in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Clark Field.
With the loss, the Bullets (5-1) saw their 10-match home unbeaten streak come to an end. Gettysburg went 7-0-3 at Clark over the stretch, which started with a victory in its 2015 season finale.
Cam Avery made four of his five saves in the second half for Lebanon Valley (4-1-1), which has yielded just one goal in its last five matches.
Ranked No. 20 in the most recent D3soccer.com Top-25, Gettysburg outshot the Dutchmen 4-2 in the opening half, when Avery and senior
Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) made one stop apiece.
LVC, last year's MAC Commonwealth Conference runner-up, scored what held up as the game-winner early in the second half. Tyler Skye crossed a ball from the right and found Mitch Crane, who sent home a one-timer from the right post.
The Bullets would turn up the pressure offensively and had several excellent looks at the net. Senior
Lucas Weissman (Short Hills, N.J./Milburn) had his header from point-blank range snuffed out in the 60th minute. Around three minutes later, senior
Patrick Santini (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) nearly drilled in a well-struck ball inside the right post following a corner kick, but Avery was there to make another stop.
Lebanon Valley struck again, however, in the 75th minute. Tanner Therit took a pass on the left side of the box, one-touched around the defender, and drilled in a shot across the goalmouth.
Gettysburg would attempt three more shots but only one was on target, when Avery made another impressive stop in the 84th minute on a low shot in front of the net from Santini.
The Bullets return home for a big Centennial Conference clash on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they face Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 7 by D3soccer.com and No. 16 by the United Soccer Coaches.
