No. 16 Johns Hopkins Edges Bullets

Blue Jays Score Game-Winner in 42nd Minute

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – In an evenly-played match, a 42nd-minute goal was the difference as Johns Hopkins edged Gettysburg 1-0 in a Centennial Conference (CC) match-up of two nationally-ranked teams Saturday evening at Clark Field.

Arden Chew scored the lone goal of the night for the undefeated Blue Jays (8-0, 2-0 CC), who entered the game ranked 16th by the United Soccer Coaches and seventh by D3soccer.com. Gettysburg carried a No. 20 ranking by the same website.

Statistically, the match could not have been much closer, with Hopkins holding a 7-6 advantage in shots while the Bullets (5-2, 1-1 CC) earning a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) made three saves for Gettysburg while Bryan See stopped a pair of shots for the Blue Jays.

Hopkins threatened early, when Connor Jacobs dribbled into the left side of the box and rocketed a across the goalmouth in the sixth minute. But Keane made a diving deflection to his left.

Keane registered another stop on a header in the 33rd minute, but the Blue Jays broke through eight minutes later, when Chew blasted a quick shot from just beyond the right side of the box and inside the far post.

The Blue Jays nearly added to their lead early in the second half, but a rip from RJ Moore ricocheted off the right post.

The two sides would combine for seven shots in the half, but only two were on goal. Keane made another save in the 77th minute to keep the Bullets within striking distance.

Gettysburg had its best look in the 86th minute, when freshman Sam Lerman (Wayzata, Minn./Field School) sent a beautiful corner kick into the box. Senior Patrick Santini (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) directed a header toward the left post, but Hopkins' keeper Bryan See made a diving stop.

It turned out to be the final shot of the game as the Blue Jays' came away with their seventh shutout of the year.

Gettysburg returns to the pitch on Wednesday, when it visits McDaniel at 4 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
