GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Isabel Klatt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) forced overtime when she scored in the 84th minute, and the Gettysburg College women's soccer team came away with a 1-1 tie versus Frostburg State in a non-conference match Wednesday evening at Clark Field.
The Bullets (4-2-2) outshot Frostburg 17-12 and held a 19-4 advantage in corner kicks. Gettysburg controlled the match in the two overtime periods, when it outshot the Bobcats 7-0 and gained nine corners.
Freshman
Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) made five of her six saves in the second half for Gettysburg while Emily Faust entered the game at the start of the second half for the Bobcats. Both keepers made a pair of crucial highlight-reel saves beyond the first half.
Each team took four shots in the opening period, when Sammon and starting Frostburg keeper Jenny Bullers made one save apiece. But neither side could find the back of the net and it was a scoreless game at the break.
The two sides got untracked offensively in the second half, when the Bobcats held an 8-6 shot advantage. Sammon kept Frostburg off the scoreboard with a pair of tremendous back-to-back saves in the 56th minute, first making a diving stop on a free kick before swatting away a rebound attempt while still on the ground.
The visitors broke through in the 69th minute when what appeared to be a cross from deep in the right wing snuck inside the left post. But with 6:38 left, senior
Maddie Heaney (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) found Klatt inside the box with a cross from the right. Klatt booted a low shot past a diving keeper for her team-leading third goal of the season to knot the score at 1-all.
Gettysburg controlled the match the rest of the way, first gaining three consecutive corner kicks over the final two minutes of regulation. Then in the first overtime, the Bullets gained another six corners, including four over the opening four minutes. However, Gettysburg managed just two shots in the first extra session.
The Bullets continued their pressure in the second OT, when it outshot Frostburg 5-0 and placed three shots on goal. On the first shot of the period, junior
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) nearly posted her second straight golden goal, ripping a well-struck ball that nearly cleared Faust. However, the keeper made a leaping fingertip stop.
Gettysburg had another excellent scoring opportunity with just over three minutes left, when Klatt found some open space and rifled a shot from the right side. But Faust made another leaping deflection before following up with her final save on a free kick from senior
Gillian Sencindiver (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) with just over two minutes to go.
Gettysburg returns home on Friday, when it takes on Bryn Mawr in another Centennial Conference match starting at 7 p.m.
