Women’s Soccer Plays Etown to Scoreless Draw

Sammon Makes Six Saves

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season the long way, working double overtime before coming away with a scoreless draw at Elizabethtown College in a non-conference match-up Saturday evening.

Freshman Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) collected six saves for Gettysburg (1-1-1), including a stop in the final minute, to earn her first collegiate shutout.

In an evenly-played match, both teams took 15 shots.

Hailey Parks made seven saves for the Blue Jays (1-1-1).

Defense controlled the opening half, when the Bullets held a 4-3 edge in shots. Gettysburg attempted the only shot on goal in the period.

The action picked up in the second stanza, when Etown outshot the Bullets 9-7. However, the goalies were up to the challenge, as both Sammon and Parks turned aside four shots apiece. In the final six minutes of regulation, Sammon made a pair of saves while Parks stopped an offering from sophomore Caroline Kostecky (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven) in the final minute.

Each side took one shot in the first overtime, when Parks made a save on a shot from junior Samantha Esposito (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) midway through the 10-minute period.

Both teams continued to threaten offensively in the second overtime, when the Bullets outshot the Blue Jays 3-2. But Parks rejected a pair of shots early in the period before Sammon settled the score when she picked up a save in the game's closing seconds.

The Bullets continue their five-game road swing on Wednesday, when they visit York (Pa.) College at 7 p.m..
