Wright to Resign as Assistant Vice President

He Has Served at Gettysburg College for 32 Years as Administrator, Coach

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Development Officer David Wright has announced his resignation, it was announced on Tuesday.

Wright, who has served the College in a number of roles over the last 32 years, has accepted a position as Headmaster of the prestigious Subiaco Academy, located in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains in the Arkansas River Valley. Subiaco Academy is a Catholic international college-prep boarding and day school founded in the Benedictine tradition for young men in grades 7-12.

Wright will remain at Gettysburg College through June. In accordance with the College's inclusive hiring practices, a national search will be undertaken to fill his current position.

"I have been blessed to work with incredibly talented colleagues and I have been inspired by thousands of outstanding students during my tenure at Gettysburg College," said Wright. "I owe the institution and the wonderful people associated with this fabulous place a huge debt of gratitude. I am very excited to be joining a deeply committed and caring environment where I hope to be able to help influence young men to lives of significance."

As headmaster, Wright will have full leadership responsibility for the vision and direction of all educational programs at Subiaco, including management of the Academy's extensive property, fiscal and human resources, and the development and maintenance of student life programs that integrate personal growth and character formation with Benedictine values. He will be responsible for developing strategic direction for the institution, along with the Board of Trustees, and he will be the Chief Executive Officer.

"Dave has truly been an invaluable member of the Gettysburg College community for over three decades," said Barbara Fritze, Vice President of Enrollment and Educational Services at Gettysburg College. "He has positively impacted countless student-athletes, coaches, and administrators during his tenure. His vision and initiative have been instrumental in leading the Athletic Department to unprecedented success. We wish him all the best as he embarks on this new and exciting chapter in his life."

Wright's tenure at Gettysburg College has prepared him well for this challenging step in his career. As athletic director, he has championed Gettysburg athletics to distinction with numerous conference titles in various sports, including two National Championships in women's lacrosse. In leading a team of highly-skilled practitioners, he has developed comprehensive and robust assessment protocols and has continually advocated for exceptional student-athlete experiences inside and outside the competitive arena.

As an institutional advancement officer, Wright has succeeded in leading record-breaking fund raising efforts, including the cultivation of numerous gifts that provided significant support for the John F. Jaeger Center for Athletics, Recreation and Fitness. The Orange and Blue Club has soared during his tenure and many program and facility upgrades have been realized in large part due to Wright's strong relationship building. By aligning donor passion with institutional need, he has helped to develop one of the strongest fund raising programs in the country among peer institutions.

Wright's impact can also be recognized with his involvement as a senior member of the Enrolment and Educational management team, helping strengthen the College's brand identity and assisting with admissions, financial aid, and retention efforts. In addition, upon completion of his doctoral degree from The George Washington University, Wright played a key role in initiatives on campus including the Gettysburg College Leadership Certificate and College inclusivity efforts. His impact has also been felt as an instructor of first-year students in the "Burg" program where he has taught time management, value clarification and goal setting.

Wright arrived at Gettysburg in 1986, when he was named head men's soccer coach. In his 18 years at the helm, he would guide the Bullets to an outstanding 221-99-26 record, three Centennial Conference championships, and a pair of ECAC South Region titles. In addition, his teams appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament in seven of his final 10 seasons. Wright was named Middle Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 and was tabbed NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region Coach of the Year three times (1991, 1993, 1997). He also coached four All-Americans and five Centennial Conference Players of the Year.

Wright also spent eight seasons as head coach of the men's tennis program from 1991-97. He compiled an 84-30 record during his tenure and led the Bullets to a program-record 16 victories in 1991.

In 1996, Wright was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics before being named Director of Athletics in 2002. In 2011, he took on the added duties of development officer and was promoted to his assistant vice president role.

Wright is the husband of Cindy Wright, who serves as Director of EES Student Success, the Jaeger Center, and Campus Recreation at Gettysburg College. They are the parents of three daughters, all of whom graduated from Gettysburg: Shaina '08, Kylie '13, and Samantha '16.
