York Out-duels Gettysburg in Five-Set Thriller

Spartans erase deficit for 3-2 decision

YORK, Pa. – Gettysburg College and York (Pa.) College turned in an epic confrontation on the volleyball court Wednesday night and when the dust eventually settled, the Spartans emerged with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Bullets in the non-conference match.
 
Four of the five sets between Gettysburg (13-3) and York (11-5) were separated by three points or less. The Bullets won the opening two sets 25-23 and 25-22 before the Spartans staged an improbable comeback, winning with scores of 26-24, 25-18, and 15-13.
 
Sophomore Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) and freshman Jordyn Horowitz (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) led the charge offensively with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Stranick added 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Junior Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) posted nine kills and junior Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) produced seven kills.
 
Junior Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) recorded 30 digs, marking her fourth 30-dig effort of the season. Sophomore Maddie Buerle (New Providence, N.J./Union Catholic) added 10 digs, while classmate Sophie Gelling (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) produced seven blocks to go with five kills.
 
Freshman Sarah Ellis (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) posted 20 assists and eight digs.
 
Brooke Krebs paced York with 17 kills and Madyson Whitcomb tallied 14 kills. Alexis Harbold recorded 41 digs, while setters Gabby Emeigh and Alexandra Daley combined for 53 assists and 25 digs.
 
Gettysburg travels to Haverford College for a tri-match this Saturday, Oct. 6. The Bullets play the host Fords in a Centennial Conference affair at noon and end the day against Kean University at 2 p.m.
