Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Gettysburg College baseball team dropped both games of a double-header against Western Connecticut in their second day of their 10-game trip in Florida.
In the opening game, the Bullets (0-7) were held to just four hits and three runs as they fell 4-3 to Western Connecticut (4-3).
Sophomore
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J. /Seton Hall Prep) and senior
Chuck Probst (Northbend, Pa. /Bucktail) both had doubles and a run scored while Probst also batted in a run. Freshman
Matt Berube (Lutz, Fl. /Steinbrenner) had a hit and run scored while classmate
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass. /Westfield) added a hit and an RBI for the Bullets.
Junior
Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn. /Hall) started on the mound and recorded the loss. He went 4 1/3 innings giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits and tossed three strikeouts. Sophomore
John Braun (Ambler, Pa. / La Salle College) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
In the night cap, the Bullets held a 3-0 lead but Western Connecticut put together a five run sixth inning that proved to be too much for Gettysburg as they fell 6-3.
Sean Murphy had two hits on the game and a plated a pair of runs to give the Bullets their 3-0 lead in the fifth inning. Sophomore
Banks Northington (Charlottesville, Va. /Charlottesville) reached base three times going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and an RBI.
Freshman
Eric Raio (West Caldwell, N.J. /Seton Hall Prep) and
Patrick McDermott (Bryn Mawr, Pa. /Radnor) both recorded their first collegiate hit for the Bullets.
Freshman
Dan Ball (Bernardsville, N.J. /Bernards) started on the hill for Gettysburg and had a strong performance in his collegiate debut. He threw 5 2/3 innings and recorded a loss while giving up six runs, five earned and striking out three. He held the Colonials to zero runs and just four hits through the first four innings.
Gettysburg will play again tomorrow when they take on the University of Northwestern (St. Paul, Minn.) at 10:00 a.m.
