Gettysburg, Pa. – The Gettysburg women's soccer team opened the 2018 campaign with a heartbreaking overtime loss at the nationally 16th-ranked Lynchburg College on Friday evening by the final score of 1-0.
Caitlin Mertens scored in the 96th minute as Lynchburg spoiled Gettysburg season opener.
Between the pipes, sophomore
Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) tallied four saves for the Bullets.
Delia LoSapio finished the contest with eight saves to earn the victory in goal for the Hornets.
Gettysburg outshot Lynchburg 6-3 in the first half but was unable to connect on a goal.
With 50 seconds left in the contest, the Bullets had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard when freshman
Erika Muskus (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) took a shot at the goal, but Lynchburg saved it. Neither team had another chance at goal, thus sending the game into overtime.
Three minutes into overtime, Gettysburg fired off two shots, one by senior
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y.) that went wide, and the other by Muskus that hit the post. Junior
Brooke Priddy (Darnestown, Md./Bullis Scool) also notched a shot at the frame at the 94:48 marker that was saved by Lynchburg. Two minutes later, the Hornets Caitlin Mertens netted the game-winning goal off a pass from Hannah Olds who was credited with the assist.
The Bullets finished with advantages in shots (15-8), while Lynchburg edged Gettysburg in corner kicks (3-1).
Gettysburg will continue to play on the road at Roanoke College Saturday at 2 p.m.
